The phrase “outside the box” is a tired corporate world cliché, but we can’t think of a better way to describe this intriguing Massachusetts condo.

“I’ve never seen anything like this. It’s basically three cubes on top of each other at different angles,” says the listing agent, Ed Greable. “When I first saw it, I thought, ‘Wow, this is different. This is going to be for somebody who likes something out of the ordinary.’”

The 1,206-square-foot condo in Cambridge, MA, is on the market for $869,900.

“It is not cookie-cutter, which I think sets it apart from everything else out there. We’re so used to so many cookie-cutter condos,” Greable says.

Even though the residence stands alone, it is a condo. The owner doesn’t own the land it sits on, and it comes with monthly HOA fees of under $100 a month, which cover some insurance and snow removal.

The home, which dates to 2006, was constructed with marine-grade plywood typically used for boats, and it features three floors and a basement.

“It was designed to really stand out,” Greable explains. “I believe it was built with materials that the architects had easy access to.”

The home’s floor plan is wide open, and the first floor features the kitchen and dining area. Most of the house has radiant floor heating.

The kitchen is compact and has stainless-steel appliances, granite countertops, and Carrara marble. Access to the condo’s parking space is right outside the kitchen.

“It has a central staircase running up the middle, and it’s really a well thought-out and well laid-out space,” Greable says.

The distinctive wood staircase, with its bold angles, could be considered an art piece in and of itself.

The finished basement offers another 200 square feet of living space.

“The second floor is a bedroom that has sliding doors to it, and there’s also an office area attached to that as well,” Greable says.

The second floor also has a full bathroom.

On the third floor, you’ll find the master bedroom, with its attached bathroom. And although there aren’t a lot of windows, it has a lot of light.

“There are skylights on every level, so you get very good light in the property,” Greable notes. “The portions of the cubes that are not under each other have the skylights. It’s pretty cool.”

The condo is a short walk to the Red Line train to Boston, and Greable says the current owners used it as a crash pad, not as a full-time residence.

“It’s for someone who wants something unique and stands out. If you’re looking for traditional, this is not your place,” he says. “But if … you’re looking for something kind of funky and has its own vibe, this is the place for you.”
