Chicago modern

A modern home in Morris, IL, makes the most of its flatland surroundings. The luxury dwelling 60 miles southwest of Chicago celebrates the surrounding landscape with views from every room.

Set on 30.5 acres, the huge, 15,700-square-foot home is available for $4.5 million and is listed with Cheena Chandra of Jameson Sotheby’s International Realty.

This modern marvel goes way over the town’s median list price of $210,000, but for a great reason: It’s genuinely one of a kind, in an area full of suburban tract homes.

It was built in 2008 for a doctor and his wife, but the couple are moving on, now that their three children are away at college. The home features six bedrooms and 6.5 bathrooms, along with a three-car garage.

The current owner—an audiophile—invested $1 million in the home’s audio equipment, which may be music to a buyer’s ears. A projection screen is also installed.

“They’re looking to downsize and have commissioned the same architect to build a smaller home,” says Chandra.

That architect is the Chicago-based maestro Brad Lynch. His other projects include the Racine Art Museum in Racine, WI, as well as a gallery in the Art Institute of Chicago.

“He’s pretty well known in the Chicago area,” says Chandra. “It’s definitely his style of modernism.”

Lynch’s style includes red-oak veneer custom cabinetry, soaring ceilings, and an abundance of windows, to merge interior spaces with the outdoors. The open floor plan on the main level is ideal for entertaining.

Home chefs will swoon over the minimalist kitchen, which features stainless-steel Arclinea, Sub-Zero, and Gaggenau appliances, as well as an extremely long counter. There’s also an unusually generous butler’s pantry.

Unique in its design, the master suite is on the main level, and the additional five bedrooms and five baths are upstairs. The upper level also has an office with built-in shelving.

Based on showings thus far, Chandra thinks the next owner could be “a city buyer looking for a summer home” or someone “looking for something modern which you don’t see in the Midwest.”

It could also, she says, be another doctor or an office worker who is able to telecommute during the pandemic.

“The trend is that people are looking for more space,” says Chandra, “and people can work from anywhere.”

Another cool factor? It’s a state-of-the-art smart home.

“All the lights, security and music are connected,” says Chandra. “You can control it from your phone or an iPad.”

Another advanced feature, with a green bent, is the home’s geothermal heating and cooling.

“It extensively reduces energy consumption,” says Chandra. “As a result, their energy costs are about 75% lower.”

For the owner who loves to entertain and is looking for a resortlike  experience without ever having to leave home, the property’s indoor-pool pavilion with its retractable roof is a boon—especially during Midwestern winters.

“It’s almost like [having] an extension of the home,” says Chandra.

All it will take is a buyer willing to dive in to this dreamy modern marvel.
