A picturesque property that’s part of Jack London‘s original “Beauty Ranch” in Glen Ellen, CA, has come on the market for $2.895 million.

The 4.6 acres can be traced directly back to the celebrated author of “Call of the Wild” and his wife, Charmian Kittredge London. After purchasing 130 acres in 1903, including the offering now on the market, he became so enamored with the area, he eventually picked up 1,400 acres, most of which now make up Jack London State Historic Park.

London died at the age of 40 in 1916, and spent his last years in this woodsy paradise.

After his death, his widow sold off some pieces of the land, including the real estate now available. 

The property includes a midcentury modern abode from 1959 designed by the modernist firm Campbell and Wong, as well as a knotty-pine guest cottage from 1939, a vineyard, and captivating views of Sonoma Valley.

“It is so special,” says listing agent Holly Bennett, with Sotheby’s International Realty.

The current owners scooped up the three-bedroom, 4.5-bathroom spread in 1999 for $755,000.

They were drawn, Bennett says, to the “Jack London connection, the incredible, expansive views, yet close to historic downtown Glen Ellen, and how the house relates to indoor/outdoor living.”

The retreat had been a second home for the couple and eventually became their primary residence. Since then, the single-story structure has gone through two respectful remodels expanding and updating the space.

The home is perched on a knoll to ensure beautiful vistas, and the almost 3,000 square feet of living space offers high ceilings, tall windows, and access to the outside.

The floor plan offers two bedrooms and two full bathrooms and features a living room with a fireplace and a wall of windows. There’s also a modern kitchen with a center island and adjacent dining area, and such unique touches as clear-heart redwood walls on the great room and the master bedroom.

Large decks allow for the living space to extend outside. The home also includes a guest bedroom and an office. A heated, screened-in porch, with remote-control blinds, allows for year-round outdoor living.

Below the pool, the owners added 200 vines of a Bordeaux-blend varietal that are harvested and bottled on site for the owners’ personal use.

The property also boasts views that sweep from the valley floor to the front promontory of the Mayacamas mountain range of southern Sonoma County, and all the way to Mount Diablo, 60 miles away.

The wine region also features a quaint downtown area with markets, a French bakery, and restaurants, not to mention the wineries and Jack London State Historic Park.
