Live Off-Grid: Madrid, New Mexico Earthship Has Spectacular Views

One of the last Earthships that creator Michael Reynolds built is on the market in Madrid, NM.

The 2,666-square-foot home was built in 1998 and is listed for $550,000.

Reynolds is the inventor of the sustainable Earthship building method that uses earth-filled tires as the main construction material. Earthship homes are primarily off the grid and are found mostly in New Mexico.

“It’s a Michael Reynolds home, and that’s a big plus for me,” says owner Maureen Liman, who has had the place for about a year. “It is one of the last homes he actually put his hands on. Now he has a whole team of folks now that build, and he oversees everything.”

Reynolds even came out to the house when Liman bought it.

“He inspected all of the structure,” she says. “He went down into the nitty gritty of it all.”

The home is totally off the grid and has solar panels, a gray water system, and a cistern for fresh water.

“I think the most important thing is just knowing that it is 100% sustainable,” Liman explains. “It’s just a beautiful piece of property, very well appointed, meticulously maintained.”

The two-bedroom, two-bath home sits on 20 acres.

“It reminds me of the wild wild west,” says listing agent Carlos Gutierrez-Pacheco, with Vylla Home. “You’re surrounded by hills, mountains, and desert; and you’re in the middle. There’s just so much privacy, since you’re on 20 acres, and there’s 360-degree views everywhere. You see mountains everywhere you look.”

Liman says those “spectacular and unobstructed views 24/7” are exactly what attracted her to the property.

Pacheco says the quality of the home’s construction was particularly impressive to him.

“This one is professionally done,” he says. “I have seen a lot of off-grid properties on the market and with this one, everything was done perfectly.”

Liman had hoped to live in the place several months out of the year and rent it out when she was not there, but those plans did not pan out.

Pacheco believes the ideal buyer is an adventure-seeker with a natural affection for the outdoors and hiking.

“Right now, it’s snowing; and if I were to take a picture and send it to you, you’d see why it’s just so beautiful out there,” he insists.
