A home high in the hills above Los Angeles that celebrates organic modern architecture recently landed on the market for $3.2 million.

Built into a private ravine in Sherman Oaks, the one-of-a-kind home on a half-acre lot features clean lines, raw materials, and a nature-inspired color palette.

The 3,240-square-foot abode was designed in 1940 and has been updated over the years by architect Ted Tokio Tanaka. It’s clear that the famed architect was influenced by the property’s gorgeous natural surroundings.

Mature oak trees stand tall next to the wooden house, and windows in nearly every room welcome both the natural light and views of the city lights. Tanaka, a master in combining Eastern and Western design styles, drew on his appreciation of modern minimalism and his knowledge of the architectural traditions of his native Japan for this project.

“This property was initially a small structure built in 1940,” says listing agent Jonathan Butler, of Douglas Elliman – Beverly Hills. “It was expanded some in 1965. And then in 1982, the owners commissioned Tanaka to re-create the space, which included an expansion of the footprint and vertical volume of the existing structure and the addition of the second story.”

Tanaka returned to the property in 2002 to remodel the kitchen and several other interior rooms. One noteworthy change was the expansion of the primary bedroom to include a solarium.

The first story is where you’ll find the main living areas, including the kitchen, dining room, several bedrooms, and the living room with high ceilings.

The primary suite occupies the entire second story and is outfitted with a solarium, an open loft office, double sinks in the bathroom, and a private deck.

Sliding doors in the first-floor living room lead to a spacious deck, outdoor kitchen, and a swimming pool with a spa. But that isn’t the only outdoor living space. The property is replete with additional decks and landings set up for al fresco meals under the canopy of the native oak trees.

Located in the hillside Los Angeles exurb of Sherman Oaks, this property is still within proximity of the city’s hot spots, museums, and world-class hospitals.
