A waterfront mansion known as the “Boat House” in Palm Beach, FL, needs a new captain to take the helm.

Built in 1940, the six-bedroom residence’s elegant, nautical design is the work of architect Belford Shoumate.

According to the South Florida Business Journal, the Boat House was sold to the current owners by luxury developer Todd Michael Glaser and wife Kim Aimee Glaser in 2021 for $14.3 million.

Now, the sellers are poised to reel in quite a profit if they get anywhere near their $6,188-per-square-foot asking price.

‘Whimsical architect’

“What I love most about the home is the architect, who was the most whimsical architect on the island in the ’30s and ’40s,” says listing agent Liza Pulitzer, with Brown Harris Stevens of Palm Beach. “It has only had three or four owners since it was built, and the house was completely remodeled about three years ago. They added on some square footage and renovated bathrooms and the kitchen.”

Throughout the 6,040-square-foot interior, many original details are intact.

“It’s very much an Art Deco style that you don’t see on the island very often,” Pulitzer says. “Many older homes have been torn down, but this one has been restored. It still has lots of curves, plaster, and molding details that remain in place.”

Recent upgrades include the installation of hurricane windows and doors, an elevator, and wood flooring designed to “continue the nautical theme” and resemble the interior of a boat.

“There is also lovely wall space for art lovers inside the home, as well,” Pulitzer notes.

Outside, a professionally landscaped space overlooking the new in-ground pool was added, along with a modernized boat lift. The deep-water dock now features water and electrical, and the two-car garage also has air conditioning.

“There is also a fabulous roof deck that is wonderful and overlooks the Intracoastal, offering spectacular sunset viewing,” Pulitzer notes. “Its location is incredible. It’s considered to be one of the top beach accesses in the North End.”

Pulitzer believes the next buyer will be looking for something out of the ordinary.

“It will be someone who loves to be on the water and appreciates the history of the home,” she predicts. “So many people are moving here full time, so it’s to be determined if the next buyer will use the home as a primary or secondary residence. It is a six-bedroom home with five bathrooms, so it could handle a large family really easily.”
