A beautifully restored antique in Newport, RI, has just hit the market for $2,295,000.

Set in the Historic Hill neighborhood, the charming 18th-century George Mowatt House has a rich and storied past.

“The home dates back to 1786 and is a classic example of a Rhode Island three-quarter house,” said listing agent Michelle Drum, of Gustave White Sotheby’s International Realty. “There are a double set of windows on the left side and a single set on the right side, along with double chimneys.”

In addition to owning this uniquely designed home, the sellers have played an instrumental role in Newport’s history.

“The original owner was a mariner and in the early 1900s, Mr. Mowatt sold it to another Mowatt, who was a ship captain,” Drum explains. “The second Mr. Mowatt was instrumental in creating the Methodist Church a couple of doors down.

She notes that Mowatt was a prominent figure within Newport’s African American community.

The four-bedroom abode has been thoughtfully restored and preserved under the supervision of architect Richard Long, who specializes in historic preservation.

“It was important to preserve the home’s history and Colonial character while it was being updated,” Drum says. “There is an original fireplace in the basement that they probably used for cooking at one time. There are also wide-pine floors and original chimneys. The house has five fireplaces, and all of them work.”

Built-in cabinetry, ornate mantels, plaster walls, and custom millwork are found throughout the home’s 2,224 square feet.

Certain modern amenities, including central air conditioning, have been thoughtfully added to complement the dwelling’s history.

“There is also side-by-side, cobbled parking for two cars,” Drum notes. “There was, at one point, probably during the 1930s or ’40s, a single-car garage on property. You could probably get a garage or plunge pool without zoning relief, but you would need Historic District approval.”

Drum believes the next buyer will be looking for an antique home with lots of charm.

“We have had interest from someone who was looking to live here year-round,” she says. “But I think, more likely than not, it will be used as a second home,” she says. “It is in great condition and has a beautiful backyard.”

A teak deck off the living area overlooks the private, fenced backyard. And the quiet locale is just blocks from downtown Newport.

“It is a wonderful street with no through traffic,” Drum points out. “It’s so peaceful sitting on the deck, where you can see the spire of nearby Trinity Church while listening to the birds chirp.”
