The most expensive home in Charlotte, NC, was inspired by the Palace of Versailles and happens to be located on a championship golf course.

The backyard of the chateau-style estate “looks on to the 14th fairway of Quail Hollow Club which is just a phenomenal setting,” says Linwood Bolles, who is co-listing the property with Valérie Dulude, both with Premier Sotheby’s International Realty. The price is $8,750,000.

Quail Hollow has hosted several PGA tournaments and is scheduled to host the PGA Championship in 2025.

Public records show the homeowners are former U.S. Rep. Robert Pittenger and his wife, Suzanne. Pittenger represented North Carolina’s 9th Congressional District from 2013 to 2019.

“I’ve been there when the owner had a wonderful party, and I think we had probably 300 or 400 people there and had lots of room,” Bolles says. “It was a great venue for a gathering of many, many people.”

The 11,547-square-foot home sits on 1.1 acres and was completed in 2009.

“It’s just majestic and takes your breath away. It took some time to put it together and has so much quality throughout,” Bolles says. “Each room is very comfortable, and it feels like it’s wrapping its arms around you. It doesn’t feel like you’re in a cavern.”

The marble foyer boasts a 14-foot ceiling and leads into a large living room with views of the golf course.

“The living room is spectacularly welcoming with lots of space. You have a hidden television with lots of artwork throughout, and on both sides, you have fireplaces. It’s very comfortable,” he says.

There are four bedrooms and a flex space that could be fifth.

“The primary suite is on the main floor, and other bedrooms are on the second floor. There’s a great room upstairs so children can have their own room with their own TV and games,” Bolles explains.

Outside, there is a large pool and landscaped gardens on both the front and back of the house.

Bolles says his favorite room is the round sunroom.

“You can turn around and look and see the pool and the golf course,” he says. “It’s a great place to sit and read and be comfortable. I really like that room a lot.”
