It’s the lake house all the locals know about. The one-of-a-kind Castle at Smith Lake holds court in its perch above the water.

“The castle is like a landmark on Smith Lake, and it’s just one of the magical homes when you see it by water,” says listing agent Krisalyn Crye, with ARC Realty Mountain Brook. “It’s so unique, and it’s up on a cliff.”

The 4,974-square-foot home in Bremen, AL, is listed for $4.9 million. The waterfront abode was built in the 1980s and previously tested the market waters in 2019, with a $4.6 million price tag.

But after an intermission and a slight price bump, the striking home is back on the hunt for its next owner. The views alone could certainly enchant any prospective lake-house owner.

“Every room has a beautiful view of the lake from east to west and sunrise to sunset,” Crye says. “It has a 20-foot solarium of the side of the house that is all glass.”

Even though one side is all glass, the house remains private because it sits on 6 acres behind a gated driveway. But if that’s not enough space for a potential buyer, additional acreage on adjacent properties can also be purchased.

“This property is a little retreat on the lake but could actually give many options to the buyer, depending on what they need,” Crye explains.

The home was built in 1980, and the current owners have had it since the 1990s. There are four bedrooms and three full bathrooms replete with fine details—a stone staircase, three fireplaces, and many arches.

“The builder and his wife were very imaginative as far as their styles and what they really wanted,” Crye notes. “They wanted a very magical and unique home.”

She adds that the current owners appreciate how unique the place is—that it isn’t just another lake house.

The two-story solarium, understandably, is a focal point of the house.

“It is very quiet and is a great place to read a book in the morning and have a cup of coffee,” Crye says.

The property includes an 8,000-square-foot garage and workshop.

“It will hold two large buses, like for a country music singer, or a full hookup for two RVs,” Crye says. “You could also make it into a really nice garage for a car collection or a studio for recording music.”

There is also a dock with four boat slips—two with lifts. And there’s even a “fish house” with bunk beds and electricity.

The home is about an hour from Birmingham, AL, and just a few hours from Nashville, TN or Atlanta. Crye says it would make a great vacation home or full-time residence.

“I think the perfect buyer is one that can appreciate architectural detail that is unique and wants to have something different and special,” she says.
