With the New York Mets sliding all the way out of the playoff picture, team owner Steve Cohen opted for decisive moves at the MLB trade deadline.

And give the oft-maligned Mets some kudos for not staying the course and falling prey to the sunk-cost fallacy. As in the world of real estate, it’s best not to focus on the money lost on a depreciating asset and simply move forward.

Mets management made the tough call to trade away some of their best players. They also sent oodles of cash to the teams taking on some massive contracts.

In the case of ace pitcher Max Scherzer, that meant sending the Texas Rangers $35 million to cover the costs of a deal Scherzer signed in November 2021.

As for the well-traveled righty, Scherzer’s proven that he has an eye for fine real estate. In 2015, he purchased a $5.2 million home in McLean, VA, after signing on with the Washington Nationals. He then oversaw a fully modern makeover of the home, transforming the place perched right over the Potomac River into a true showpiece.

As he prepared to depart the Nats, Scherzer put the luxury home near DC on the market for $15 million in October 2020. It took a year to sell, but Scherzer’s smart makeover paid off—he sold the place for his asking price in November 2021.

Prior to the Virginia sale, Scherzer picked up an off-season mansion in the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic. He purchased a luxe five-bedroom mansion in Jupiter, FL, in spring 2020 for $9.75 million. Located right on the water, the luxe residence in a guard-gated community is equipped with an outdoor kitchen as well as a dock that can accommodate a 70-foot boat.

So the Rangers’ newest star knows he’ll head to Florida once the season is over, but where should he settle down while he’s in the Lone Star State?

We’ve picked out a few options for Scherzer to consider in his Texas house hunt. With a contract set to pay him $43 million in 2024, he can easily afford the priciest places in the Dallas metro area.

These five options are brimming with fabulous amenities like spacious gyms, courts, and fields; bounteous beds and baths; pools; immaculate grounds; and all the space a thriving sports family could desire. They’re also within commuting distance of Globe Life Field, the air-conditioned stadium where Scherzer will be pitching.

Waterfront wonder: There’s something about this home that reminds us of the modern mansion with Potomac River views that Scherzer sold in 2021. Perhaps it’s the fact that this Hill Country modern estate is also set on a body of water that feeds into a pond on the grassy and wooded grounds.

Toniest trophy:
If Scherzer wants to make a real statement in Texas, this is the place. It’s packed with opulent amenities, including a plush home theater, an indoor-outdoor gym, two primary suites, a two-story sunroom, a dining room with a wine wall, a cigar balcony, and an impressive 10-car garage.
