A glass-walled house that hugs the shoreline of Fishers Island, NY, is in search of its second owner.

On the market for $8,250,000, it’s listed with Leslie McElwreath of Sotheby’s International Realty – Greenwich Brokerage.

Designed by architect Thomas Phifer and completed in 2008, the home was commissioned by the late Thomas N. Armstrong III, a former Whitney Museum of American Art director, and his late wife. Phifer’s other projects include the forthcoming Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw and the Corning Museum of Glass’s 2015 expansion.

The one-bedroom, 2.5-bath home spanning 4,600 square feet was built to showcase 180-degree waterfront views of Fisher Island Sound. It sits on 3.15 acres on this secluded island off the eastern tip of Long Island.

“The owner (first) lived on the property in a pre-war home that tragically suffered a fire. His dream was to live in a garden with his art,” says McElwreath. “It was a dream come true and took quite a while.”

The property also includes a reflecting pool that extends to the terrace and an indoor-outdoor moss garden. A geothermal system controls heating and cooling.

Because this property is so site-specific, furnishings are included in the purchase price and the seller is also entertaining queries about the art.

“A lot of the art was purchased explicitly for the house,” says McElwreath.

Whoever buys the home will also have room to expand.

“The original design included a guesthouse, and I would expect the next owner to execute that,” says McElwreath.

Another unique aspect of this property is its manicured gardens, rocky shoreline path, 19th-century fountain, and two fountained-garden pools. There are also linden, magnolia, cherry, and Japanese maple trees plus a minimalist-design garden shed. Flower beds showcase azaleas, peonies, hydrangea, camellias, Japanese iris, and more than 40,000 daffodils.

It’s also rare for a home on the island to go on the market. Currently, there’s just one other listing available.

“We have on Fishers Island a lot of multigenerational families,” says McElwreath. Houses “trade very quietly off-market and stay in the family.”

“There are many people around the world that love to collect houses. This is a really serene retreat not far from New York City,” says McElwreath. Access to Fishers Island from Manhattan is a relative breeze, via train to New London, CT, then a ferry to the island.
