They just don’t make ’em like this anymore.
The historical, oceanfront home in Dana Point, CA, belonging to actor Anthony Edwards has come on the market.
But it will cost you: $6.5 million.
The primo property is one of the original homes built by the Doheny family, for whom Doheny State Beach is named in Dana Point.
Anyone who’s ever been to Southern California has probably heard the name Doheny, as in Edward L. Doheny, who basically started L.A.’s oil boom in 1892.
In fact, his story loosely inspired the Upton Sinclair novel “Oil!” and the film adaptation “There Will Be Blood,” starring Daniel Day-Lewis.
Historic home
The Doheny family began developing real estate in Dana Point, including Edwards’ beachside home.
“An original Doheny, this quintessential Southern California beach house is a once-in-a-lifetime offering, due to both its historical significance and expansive 10,000-square-foot private lot on the sand,” says listing agent Justin Alexander, of Compass.
“The home’s history dates back to the 19th century when the Doheny family entered into the development of Dana Point,” he continues. “This home was one of their reserved beach houses, which was also highlighted as the original model of what Dana Point beach houses looked like, similar to the houses in Beverly Hills: a classic Spanish-Colonial Revival.”
Restored residence
Edwards, who bought the property in 1998 for $1,525,000, has done a remarkable job of restoring and updating it.
The Spanish Colonial Revival is located in the Capistrano Beach community. The 2,166-square-foot home has five bedrooms and five baths, in addition to an elegant courtyard and decks, verandas, and balconies.
Unassuming from the street, as so many beachside properties are, the interior is truly remarkable. The ceilings are high and vaulted, and many of the windows and French doors are arched. The roof is made of terra-cotta tile, and some of the original brick walls are exposed. It is a work of architectural art.
The detailed tilework is notable, especially in the kitchen and the bathrooms.
Edwards is perhaps best known for playing Goose in the original “Top Gun” film. He also played Dr. Mark Greene on the first eight seasons of the hit medical drama “ER.”
More recently, the 60-year-old actor has starred in the critically acclaimed TV series “Designated Survivor,” “Inventing Anna,” and “WeCrashed.”
