To-Die-For Decor: Charleston Home With Glam Interiors Featured in Architectural Digest Asks $8.5M

A stately house showcased by Architectural Digest for its gorgeous decor is for sale in Charleston, SC.

The brick Colonial dates back to the 1940s, but in 2012, the original owner’s granddaughter rebuilt and expanded the structure during more than two years of construction.

Then, the home underwent an interior overhaul in 2020 with designer Angie Hranowsky, after the current sellers bought it in 2018 for $5,025,000.

The redesign “included a new kitchen, refinishing the floors to a lighter color, custom draperies, and wallpaper,” says listing agent Middleton Rutledge, with Daniel Ravenel Sotheby’s International Realty. “The seller and interior designer worked together to really make every room its own space, in style and design.”

The overall design caught the attention of Architectural Digest, which featured the house in a December 2022 web-exclusive home tour.

The result is a five-bedroom, 4.5-bath property listed for $8.5 million.

“It’s sort of a U-shaped home that flows really well,” explains Rutledge.  “A lot of homes here are coastal design and coastal cottage style; and this one is more contemporary, and that is what separates it.”

Most of the living spaces in the 7,254-square-foot dwelling are in one wing, while the remaining rooms are on the opposite side. A reflecting pool and courtyard are situated between the two wings.

“You’ve got beautiful spaces on the inside and then floor-to-ceiling windows all over the first floor, so you’re able to enjoy the outside while living inside,” Rutledge says.

According to the listing agent, the home is nearly flawless.

“First thing I thought after I went through it was, I can’t find one thing I don’t like about it,” Rutledge says. “Everything you would want or think you would want in a luxury home, it has it. All of the details are mapped out.”

He says all of the rooms are proportional to each other, with no room being too big or small.

“The level of finish and all of the amenities it provides are almost perfection,” he notes.

One of those amenities is a custom wine room that the seller added. The impressive storage space holds 4,000 bottles and includes temperature controls and custom lighting.

Gracious grounds

The home sits on almost an acre, on a double lot in what was one of Charleston’s first suburbs—just across the Ashley River from historic downtown Charleston.

The mature landscaping provides lots of privacy, adding to the property’s appeal. Along with a pool, there are two cabanas. And the grounds include bluestone walkways, where you can take in the mature oaks, shrubs, and other indigenous trees that create “picturesque privacy,” the listing notes.

“The anchor of the outdoor space is probably about a 200-year-old red oak that sits right outside the window in the middle of the garden,” Rutledge explains. “When they designed the house, that was an existing tree, and they knew they weren’t going to take it down. So they designed around it.”

As for the home’s next chapter, the perfect buyer “is someone who has sophisticated taste, wants outdoor space, and wants close proximity to all Charleston has to offer,” Rutledge says.
