Built in 1948 by a Frank Lloyd Wright devotee, this La Canada Flintridge, CA, home could be mistaken as a Wright design.

The hallmarks are there. With an open layout, walls of windows, a stone-stacked fireplace, custom built-ins throughout, and lots of interior wood, the 2,557-square-foot home is reminiscent of many Wright houses.

But this four-bedroom, three-bath dwelling was actually designed and lived in by local architect, Jack Simison, a fan of Wright’s work—especially organic design.

Referred to as the Simison House, the well-preserved property is on the market for the first time in its 75 years. It’s available for $2,500,000.

Simison’s commercial architectural projects include area country clubs—La Canada Country Club and the Flintridge Tennis Club—along with several local residences. He died in 2009, at the age of 86.

‘Peaceful and serene’

“Mr. Simison built the house for himself and his family,” says listing agent Luis Segura, of The Agency.

Segura calls the property “very peaceful and serene.”

Site-specific architecture was key to the home’s construction. Just as Wright did with many of his homes, Simison designed the property to integrate with the landscape. The home is nestled into a cul-de-sac, with lush plantings.

Other than an upgraded kitchen to meet today’s modern culinary needs, nothing has been changed—in the best possible way.

The home is constructed from quality materials, such as slate flooring and Douglas fir. No expenses were spared in 1948. The interiors, such as the built-in seating in the living room, have held up amazingly well for being 75 years old.

Today it would be nearly impossible to build a house with this much Douglas fir, and the owners’ studious caretaking is revealed in its beauty.

“It’s been maintained and oiled over the years,” says Segura.

The home is divided into two wings, with the bedrooms on one side and common living spaces on the other.

The bedrooms, two of which are en suite, feature views of the Los Angeles skyline. Delightfully, there is a cedar-lined closet in the primary bedroom. The home also includes an office; laundry area; and a detached, two-car garage.

Space for entertaining

“With that open layout and the walls that open up, this is a house that entertains well,” says Segura.

The home is set on nearly a quarter-acre and includes a backyard and sunken, brick courtyard. In all, there is room for at least three outdoor seating areas and additional space for entertaining.

Segura was wowed by the seamless connection between the home’s indoor and outdoor spaces. Three of the four wall panels open to the outside.

“I have not seen (this) before—where the whole wall opens up,” he says.

The home is staged with period furnishings, including Barcelona chairs and an Eames chair, which could be sold to the buyer, Segura says.

Early interest in the listing suggests the buyer may be drawn to the home’s striking architecture and the community’s top-rated schools.

“It’s like living in a piece of art, but it’s also functional,” Segura says.
