If you’ve ever wanted to own a piece of movie history, now is your chance.

The restored beachfront inn featured in “Nights in Rodanthe” has once again surfaced on the market; and it could be yours, if you’re willing to splash out $1,699,000—a price drop of $100,000 from its initial listing in October.

Located in Rodanthe, NC, the six-bedroom inn is the setting for the 2008 Richard Gere and Diane Lane film.

Based on Nicholas Sparks‘ 2002 novel, the romance tells the story of Adrienne Willis (played by Lane), who is tasked with watching over her friend’s inn for a weekend. The only guest is Dr. Paul Flanner (played by Gere). The two spark as they sort out the complexities in their lives.

The plot unfolds with the lovely home as its backdrop. And superfans have flocked to the inn ever since.

Romantic real estate

On the first floor, there’s a sunny dining room and a cozy living room with a fireplace.

A sea-foam green kitchen offers a colorful reminder of the home’s coastal surroundings.

Upstairs, there are four bedrooms that include “the infamous antiques-filled blue bedroom,” where Flanner slept. Nearby is another bedroom where Willis recalled memories of her dad, the listing states.

There’s also what the listing calls the “garden room” on this floor, along with a bedroom that offers Atlantic Ocean views and a private terrace.

The third floor boasts an additional bedroom and full bath, a kitchenette, an outdoor terrace, and lounge areas.

A top floor offers a sixth bedroom with spectacular ocean views.

Relocated and rented

The current owners bought the Outer Banks property in 2018 for $875,000 and are looking to nearly double their money—assuming they get anywhere near the $579 per-square-foot asking price.

“What the sellers have done—and what the previous owners did—is just tremendous, to keep as much of the interior in line with the movie as possible,” says listing agent Vicki L. Langhel, of Colony Realty Corp. “There are props from the movie that can be found in the house, and it is currently being used as a rental property. Everyone wants to stay there.”

When the previous owners purchased the 2,933-square-foot property in 2010, they actually relocated it—to prevent it from being washed away, a casualty of beach erosion.

Once the owners had the home in its new location, they began the process of re-creating some of the rooms seen in the movie. They even added the iconic blue shutters from the film.

While beachfront rentals often experience dwindling reservations as the cooler months roll in, Langhel says this home stays booked almost year-round.

“Typical rentals here are booked seven months out of the year, but this one is booked for 10 and a half months,” she notes. “The reason why it is so successful is that the interior is so unique. There are lots of twists and turns and nooks and crannies to explore; and it sits on a rather large lot.”

Langhel is optimistic the next owner will continue the property’s legacy as a popular rental.

“When the movie was filmed here, it was a huge event,” she recalls. “We’re a small community here on Hatteras Island, so it’s kind of an icon and really special to us.”
