Former church turned into home

A once-hallowed building in New York’s Hudson Valley has served an array of purposes since it was constructed nearly a century ago—and it’s ready for another.

Constructed in 1933, the red brick structure began its life as a church and has been born again as a yoga space, photo studio, chocolate factory, and events venue. Most recently, it has been a very spacious single-family residence.

Now, the 8,000-square-foot building located in Hudson is on the market for $2,875,000.

“The current owner has transformed it into a usable space,” says listing agent James Male. “It has multiple uses for any buyer coming in.”

The origins of the church aren’t clear, but Male says the property hasn’t been used as a religious space for many years. He’s well-acquainted with the structure, having sold it twice prior to this latest listing.

And for a buyer who loves an open floor plan, this layout really delivers.

The “spaces have not been divided, so it still feels like a large, open, ecclesiastical space,” Male explains. “It’s decorated and much more comfortable and in a more residential manner.”

There’s no formal bedroom in place right now. Male says previous owners used the lower level for their business and lived in the former sanctuary area, arranging their bedroom in the altar space.

There is a full bathroom; and a renovated, top-of-the-line kitchen awaits on the lower level.

Many of the former church’s flourishes, including the light fixtures, windows, and structural rivets, date to the building’s origin. There’s even a choir loft, Male says.

But thankfully not everything is circa the1930s. The building has received upgrades to its infrastructure, including a new roof, updated electric, and improved plumbing.

Because of its size and layout—with high ceilings and sprawling rooms—the structure has potential as a live-work space.

While the building does not currently have a residential permit, it has in the past. If the new owner chooses to go that route, the former church likely could become a home again, Male says.

Located two hours from New York City (Amtrak trains are in and out of the nearby station 13 times daily) and just two blocks from the Hudson River, this property’s location is a major selling point.
