An imposing Victorian in Rome, GA, is offering potential buyers a look inside where dreams (or nightmares) are made.

The chilling Creel House seen in Season 4 of the hit Netflix show “Stranger Things” has just landed on the market for a cool $1.5 million. Although the show takes place in the fictional town of Hawkins, IN, the real-life house can be found in this Southern town.

The listing drew clicks from fans of the show, making it the most popular home on Realtor.com®.

Built in 1882 in the East Rome Historic District, the 6,000-square-foot, seven-bedroom estate underwent a massive makeover when it was featured in the show.

Transformed for ‘Stranger Things’

“My understanding is the owners were approached for the home to be used as a movie set,” says Mimi Richards, who is co-listing the property with Jeb Arp and Katie Edwards of Toles, Temple & Wright.

Once production wrapped, the set was turned back to a real-life, single-family house.

“But they did an incredible job transforming it,” Richards adds. “They put all sorts of decorations and props up, put all of these sticks, twigs, and trees and transformed the whole thing in a week. The people on the set are really magicians. It was incredible to see. I didn’t get to go inside during the filming, but it was incredible to see that total redecoration.”

Old-world charm

The sellers purchased the home just three years ago for $350,000 and then renovated it thoughtfully.

“When the sellers bought the house, a lot of the woodwork had shown a bit of age, but the owner was able to work his magic and restore it to its original condition,” Richards says. “He has this amazing way of being able to see how they could quickly change the look. They took the time to learn how to put back the historical architectural features to restore the home’s old-world charm.”

Many movies have been filmed in Rome over the years, including “Black Widow” with Scarlett Johansson, “Remember the Titans” with Denzel Washington, and “Sweet Home Alabama,” with Reese Witherspoon.

“I have lived in Rome within a 3-mile radius my whole life and am very proud of my community,” Richards says. “I have actually been involved with this house since the 1960s through historic preservation.”

Strangely familiar

Many of the home’s details seen in the series can still be found, including “the majestic formal dining room where telekinesis is no longer practiced during meals; an adjoining parlor, perfect for playing Dungeons and Dragons; and a living room ideal for hosting meetings of the Hellfire Club,” according to the listing.

Original details include the built-in cabinets, a custom buffet, layered moldings, and some unusual finds such as an antique wall safe and a cast-iron urinal.

“The wall safe is original and is about 4 feet wide by 5 feet tall or so,” she says. “When you open it up, it has all of these compartments to store whatever you would like.”

The chef’s kitchen features gorgeous custom cabinetry, a walk-in pantry, and a butler’s pantry with a wet bar, ice maker, and storage. The centerpiece of the kitchen is a 15-foot island “draped in black marble” that is large enough to seat up to 10 diners.

The flexible floor plan offers the next buyer the opportunity to create a primary suite on the main floor or upstairs.

There’s also an unfinished third floor with a separate staircase, providing more expansion possibilities. The 1-acre lot also comes with a Gothic-style guesthouse.

Richards says the property has received a lot of attention because of the popular Netflix show. But please, no running up that hill for a look.

“We do require a pre-approval letter just because of its public notoriety and the home is occupied,” she says.

“It’s a wild card who will end up buying it. We had a woman who was selling an equestrian center in Florida and wanted to move to Georgia. We also had another person looking into the possibility of converting it back to a bed-and-breakfast. That could be a possibility because it actually was one several years ago.”

The home as a tourist attraction certainly makes sense. After all, “stranger things” have happened.
