A spectacular midcentury modern marvel designed by architect Erich Gnant is available in Brookfield, WI, for $1,190,000.

Conceived as his personal residence and built in1960, the 5,543-square-foot home is a master class in forward-thinking design and where Gnant and his wife raised their family.

“When the home was built, it was billed as [Gnant] trying to test the market for upscale contemporary homes,” says listing agent Colleen Resendiz, of Benefit Realty. Five other homes designed by Gnant were built in the surrounding area.

As for his personal home, it has retained much of its original beauty, says Resendiz.

“An indoor swimming pool was installed in the ’70s,” she adds. “An indoor pool is so practical here in Wisconsin, because you don’t get the damage of the sun beating on it in the summer, and you get to use it all year long.”

Bonus: Pool time can be followed up with a little extra leisure in the home’s whirlpool, Finnish sauna, and steam room.

Many have compared Gnant’s multilevel, four-bedroom home to The House on the Rock, a popular tourist attraction in nearby Spring Green.

“The same laminate countertops that are in this kitchen are also in The House on the Rock,” Resendiz notes. “It’s an authentic midcentury design.”

Natural materials are abundant throughout Gnant’s residence.

“It has extensive use of redwood everywhere along with Lannon stone, slate floors, and wood ceilings,” Resendiz says. “There are also incredible rooflines that go along with midcentury design, and there is a two-story window on the side that is just incredible.”

The home’s primary bedroom features a wood ceiling, walnut paneling, and a private sitting room with views of the garden.

From the oversized windows to the wood-beamed cathedral ceiling of the living and dining rooms, Gnant’s signature elements are timeless in their appeal.

“Gnant was certainly ahead of his time when it came to designing this home,” Resendiz says. “He installed a low-voltage lighting system that is still there today. There is a room they call a music room that has a vintage map on the wall. Not only was Gnant an architect, but he was also a talented violinist and displayed many of his violins in that room.”

Gnant and his wife have since passed away. The couple’s daughter now lives in the home and has taken cues from her father’s sensibilities when it comes to renovations.

“The only updates she has done are with the bathrooms and taking out some carpet and installing oak floors,” Resendiz says. “When she was doing the updates, she was asking herself what her father would have done.”
