As luxurious as Maui, HI, is, many oceanfront homes are traditional Hawaiian architecture—and aging fast.

That’s what makes this new listing—a 7,394-square-foot oceanfront property for $35 million—stand out, according to listing agent Chelsea Dimin, of Compass.

“You don’t find modern properties in Hawaii like this,” Dimin says.

In addition to its modern look, its locale can’t be beat. With 158 feet of ocean frontage, the design takes advantage of the water views.

Being close to the coast has meant amazing whale-watching opportunities. The owners even built an observation deck 15 feet above the water with fire pits and couches.

“That’s where the owners like to entertain and spend their time,” says Dimin.

The property is the highest-priced on Maui and is tied with two other properties as the most expensive home for sale in Hawaii.

Custom build

As for this custom build in Kihei, along Maui’s southwest shore, it’s a main house and a pool house on a 0.6-acre lot. Both structures were designed by Maui architect Rick Ryniak.

“It’s one of the few properties I’ve seen with a second-story, open-air walkway connecting the house to the three-car garage and the pool house,” says Dimin.

It offers five bedrooms and five en suite baths. There’s a home office upstairs with a killer ocean view.

“The glass walls create the art, framing the ocean,” Dimin says. You get views of the West Maui Mountains and the island of Molokai.

Maui is known for having the sunniest weather of all the islands, the agent notes, and these natural landmarks in the distance create visual interest.

Sensational spa

Another rare amenity is the resort-style spa—ideal for entertaining a large group.

There are two heated pools, three spas, a cold plunge pool, a dry sauna, a steam room, and a gym. One of the spas is perfectly positioned on a 1,600-square-foot rooftop for nighttime stargazing.

The home was designed to blend in with its surroundings. For example, lava rock was used for the kitchen countertops and bar area.

The owners built the home in 2010 as a vacation getaway.
