The quirky, spacious home that served as a source of inspiration for artist Kenneth Wyatt is for sale for the first time.

Wyatt was a minister who later in life discovered a talent for painting and created about 9,000 works of art. He built the jaw-dropping, 8,307-square-foot home in Tulia, TX, for himself and his family in 1969. The property is now listed for $599,000 and the odd, retro interiors don’t seem to be stopping buyers: Offers are already coming in.

“He’s known all over for his Christian art as well as Western art,” says listing agent Kristal Mooneyham, with Larry Brown, Realtors. “The part of the house that was added on was his gallery, so people would come from all over the world to see his art in his home.” And what a home it is.

Wyatt died in May 2021. He was 90.

A fulfillment center for reproductions was built on top of a tennis court on the home’s grounds.

“You could tear it down and have a tennis court if you wanted that,” Mooneyham says.

The home has four bedrooms and six bathrooms and is kind of a time capsule, with a loft area that overlooks the gallery below, shag carpeting, and a lot of dark wood.

The finished basement has a putting green.

“It’s very dated, but it’s very cool,” she says, adding some of the wooden beams in the home are telephone poles. “Everything has a meaning to it. It’s got a really cool floating staircase he built himself. It’s just got a lot of history and cool stuff to it.”

Mooneyham says the new owner might want to do some modernizing and probably replace the appliances.

“It’s one of the most beautiful homes in the town for sure, but it’s going to take somebody that has an eye and wants to update [it] to 2022. It could be incredible.”

She suggests turning the wood-clad gallery into a den or man cave.

To some, the closetlike space where Wyatt painted might seem better served for storage, but not to the late owner.

“There’s a little bitty room upstairs, with no windows. You would have thought that it would have had a window in, but he wanted to have constant lighting,” Mooneyham explains. “There’s paint on the floors and on the walls. It’s just where he created, which makes it super cool.”

The 0.62-acre lot also features gardens, a courtyard, and walking paths, perfect for getting the creative juices flowing.
