The childhood home of President Grover Cleveland has hit the market in Fayetteville, NY. You can now own a piece of presidential history for $295,000.

Cleveland was the first Democrat elected after the Civil War in 1885. He is also the only president to have been elected twice, but not consecutively. He held the office from 1885 to 1889 and from 1893 to 1897. Before his presidential terms, he served as the governor of New York and mayor of Buffalo.

Cleveland reportedly lived in the domicile with his family from the age of 4 until the age of 13.

“The house was built in 1841 for the president’s father,” says listing agent Pat Humpleby, of Dewitt Real Estate. “The house is still the original home, but we think at some point it was added on to at the back of the house.”

Located less than 10 miles east of Syracuse, the three-bedroom village Colonial offers a primary bedroom on the first floor, formal living and dining rooms, an eat-in kitchen with wood cabinets, and a heated porch.

Upstairs, there are two more bedrooms, a bathroom, and a sitting area that could be used as an office. The home sits on a half-acre lot surrounded by gardens.

“To the right of the front steps is a door that leads to the basement that is ground level, which is interesting,” she said. “There is a room there that is semifinished and would be a very charming room if it were fixed up. The home has a nice stone foundation, and the lot is just beautiful with lovely gardens.”

There is a detached garage that Humpleby says was added in the late 1940s or early 1950s.

“There are also side steps on the house that go to a side door that leads right into the kitchen,” she said. “All of that is original to the house.”

Original details still remain in the cozy, 1,576-square-foot layout.

“The hardwood floors on the first floor are narrow, but up on the second floor there are wide floorboards,” she said. “What is really unique is that the bedroom closets are all good size. Typically, in older homes, they have really narrow closets, but these are very good size.”

As for the affordable price tag, Humpleby says, “Our market is a little different than other places. It’s a very nice neighborhood with many of the homes of that same vintage.”

Does Humpleby think the next owner will have a love for historic homes, or simply want to live in the place where a future president grew up?

“The interest we have had in the property is from people who love historic homes,” she says. “I think people who like historical homes are certainly going to be interested in this one as the childhood home of a former U.S. president. It’s just a very charming house in a great location surrounded by homes that are all well cared for.”
