The midcentury modern gem in Burien, WA, remained in the same family from when it was built in 1957 until the current owners bought it in 2010.

“I’m not kidding you when I say it was a time capsule, pretty much completely original,” says listing agent Heidi Ward, with Windermere Real Estate, who also represented the sellers in the earlier sale. The current owners “have now spent 12 years in that home restoring it in a manner that is on a level that I don’t know that I have seen [before].”

The 3,173-square-foot home is available for $2,375,000 and is highlighted by an entire wall of windows with amazing views of Puget Sound.

In the late 1950s, a Boeing engineer and his self-proclaimed efficiency expert wife commissioned architect Al Bumgardner to build this home for them near Seattle.

After the current owners purchased the home from the estate, they restored nearly everything while adding their own touches along the way.

“One of the owners is a very talented woodworker. So in the kitchen, they very carefully rearranged spaces and rebuilt all the cabinets to look just like the originals,” Ward says. “Then you open them, and they all have brand-new interior hardware.”

The home has four bedrooms and three bathrooms. One features a sink with a particularly nice view of the blue waters below.

“That’s the little powder room off the kitchen,” Ward explains. “I don’t know what it would say about a person as a human if they ever got tired of those views.”

The owners “really did endeavor to honor and revere the original design and architecture, and yet make it live the way people want to live now,” Ward says.

Two of the three brothers who grew up in the house came by to see it during a recent open house, Ward says. “They were there for well over an hour just slowly walking through the home and noticing things. They were blown away.”

Outside, there are three delightful decks to survey the surrounding natural beauty. One is off the main living level, another is off the main bedroom, and a third is across the yard. There’s also an enchanting courtyard.

“There’s a very private courtyard that is tucked in between the backside of the carport and the backside of the little family room off the kitchen, and it’s lovely,” Ward explains.

The owners are in no hurry to sell and plan to await an offer from a buyer who will cherish the home as much as they have, Ward says.

“The perfect buyer would be somebody who has a deep understanding of just how special this home is, from its roots all the way up to what has so thoughtfully and brilliantly been done to it in the last 12 years,” Ward says. Someone who “would revere that and take care of it.”
