Built from huge logs, this giant house in the Catskills stands out from the normal housing stock and inspired the listing agent to reach for a literary reference.

The listing refers to the 7,100-square-foot house in West Shokan, NY, as an “Elf Lord’s Forest Castle at the World’s Beginning.”

“I tried to find a feeling for what it would be like. I’ve seen ‘The Hobbit,’ and it just occurred to me that this would be appealing to an elfin lord to live in a place like this out in the middle of the forest,” says listing agent Sherret Chase, with Four Seasons Sotheby’s International Realty.

In J.R.R. Tolkien‘s classic books, elves lived in wild and natural places, which could describe this idyllic 8.87-acre property surrounded by mountain peaks and two streams.

“They come together just below the house where the stone bridge is,” Chase explains of the dual waterways. Besides the bridge, the entry to the picturesque home is also made of stone.

“It’s just so pretty. It’s not just another rectangular box,” adds Chase. “It’s very well laid out, and it kind of fits the topography.”

State forest land surrounds the property, and the home is nestled in an extremely private setting at the very end of a mountain road.

“It’s not often visited because of the dead-end road, and there are no trailheads for the public in the vicinity,” says Chase. But there are private trails on the property that lead to several mountains.

Built in 2009, the eight-bedroom home is equipped with all the necessities required for year-round use. The current owners, though, used it mostly as a vacation getaway.

The property includes a smaller separate log structure that’s a bit more rustic than the main house.

“It’s about 800 square feet. There’s a single room and a loft with wooden logs exposed on the inside. It doesn’t have any systems other than electricity,” Chase says.

Whether potential buyers sense Hobbit vibes or not, the main home is far from rustic. It’s an enchanting getaway in a picture-perfect setting.

“It’s very special, elegant, and luxurious,” Chase says. “It even has good cell and internet service.”
