$50M Ocean's 13 in the OC

A modern estate in Orange County known as Ocean’s 13 is on the market for $50 million. Although it’s never made an appearance on the silver screen, it is extremely camera-ready.

The name evokes high-stakes cinematic capers in Las Vegas, but this mansion is pure Southern California bliss.

“Ocean’s 13 is because we’re 13 Old Ranch Road, so there’s the No. 13 and we’re also over 13 acres and we have amazing ocean views,” explains Gary Dinkin, who owns the property with his wife, Lindy Dinkin.

The homesite in Laguna Niguel, CA, dictated the type of house the couple would build in 2016. In an area filled with Tuscan and Mediterranean mansions, their choice is a standout.

“We were originally going to do something somewhat Mediterranean and somewhat modern. As we continued to look at it, I kept pulling toward modern,” Lindy says.

“I kept telling my husband, if we’re going to really invest in ourselves and do something from start to finish, why do something that’s been done a million times,” she continues. “Modern was a way we could truly express whatever came into our minds and really push the envelope.”

The end result is a 14,500-square-foot modern masterpiece where almost every room offers an incredible view.

“I go out and have coffee in the morning, and it’s just amazing. Any time I go into one of the rooms, it’s just so gorgeous. I get overwhelmed—even after this amount of time,” Lindy says.

“It’s not just about the ocean views,” Gary adds. “If you have a home that is just on the ocean, good luck at nighttime when you’re staring off into nothingness. We also have amazing city and mountain views, and in the nighttime, we get the spectacular lights. We have the best of everything.”

Modern touches begin the moment you step on the property with a colorful stainless-steel and glass gate that opens to a 500-foot driveway. At the front of the home, there are pivoting iron and glass entry doors.

“We went through three architects because no architect could figure out how to build this home with unobstructed views without having large columns supporting the substantial overhangs,” Gary explains. “The way that we did that was through cantilevers and using structural engineers and steel to help us to construct the home that we absolutely wanted.”

All six bedrooms and 10 bathrooms offer up modern flair.

“This house was designed for fairly simple living, even though it’s a complex home with a lot of fantastic features,” Gary says.

Most of the central living spaces, including the entry, kitchen, and primary bedroom, are on the main floor. Guest rooms, a home theater, and a game room sit one level down.

For further enjoyment of the views and sunny weather, the home features seamless indoor-outdoor living.

“All the doors pocket, so you literally can just open them up and the house becomes truly massive once you start going outside,” says Gary.

Outside, there’s a large pool, kitchen, and 2,500 square feet of entertaining space with a fire pit that seats 25. And the fire pit is in the pool.

While the Dinkins love the house, they say it’s time for a new challenge.

“Life is always an adventure. There’s always another one. I think that’s part of what we want to do. We conquered this one when everybody told us it was literally impossible to build the home that we built,” Gary says. “We have other ideas. We’d like to go out there and probably do this again, but on a much smaller scale.”

The couple say they are looking to build about a 6,000-square-foot home, just big enough for their two goldendoodles, Sunshine and Champ, and for when their daughters and other family and friends visit.

“Some other family will have the time of their life in this house, a family that entertains and has social gatherings,” Lindy says. “This would be an amazing property for the right family, and someone needs to do this justice and that would make me so happy.”

Gary is the founder of SmartClixx, a gift card payment platform that was sold to ZipLine in July 2019. Lindy was a principal with the company for more than 14 years. They have two adult daughters.

“We worked very hard our entire lives, and our parents gave us a very strong work ethic. After being successful in the businesses that we owned, we were able to enjoy our true labor of love, which is spending time with each other and then undertaking the largest project we had ever done, which was building this house,” he says.

The listing agents are Josh Altman, Matt Altman, and Andy Stavros of Douglas Elliman, and the home is co-listed with John Stanaland with Villa Real Estate.
