45-Foot-Tall Lakefront Silo Home in New York Offers Incomparable Views

A lake house constructed from an old farm silo proved popular with buyers. Built in 1983, the fanciful residence is a smart reuse project that received offers within days.

“In the late ’70s and early ’80s, natural, eco-friendly homes were popular. So the original builder took a silo, dismantled it, and brought it over to Chase’s Lake, reassembled it and then added on to it,” explains listing agent Natalie Roth.

Roth, who’s with Benn Realty, has sold the home  in Glenfield, NY, three times over the past few years.

This time, the list price was $319,000 and offers came in within three days.

“The first time [I sold it], in 2019, it took a little bit longer,” she says. “The market wasn’t quite as hot then. I think it took 168 days,” she says.

The converted silo stretches 45 feet high and blends right in with the surrounding trees.

“The views are gorgeous. Chase’s Lake is a nice, motorless, Adirondack lake, and it’s beautiful,” Roth says. “I’ve never seen a silo house. I’ve seen lighthouses and unique designs, but this is the first silo I’ve seen.”

The ground floor contains two bedrooms, a bathroom, and the kitchen and living space.

“As you go up the silo, floor No. 1 is a bedroom, floor No. 2 is a bedroom, and up on the top is a little lookout studio area,” she explains. The top level would make a great art studio or reading nook because of the natural light and views.

Located at the end of a private road, the silo home stands out—in the best possible sense.

“You’re not used to seeing [silos] on a lakefront or a residential area. You’re used to seeing them in the middle of a field. [There] they look smaller than they do than when you’re looking at them in a residential area,” Roth says.

The sellers bought the home fully furnished and are selling it the same way.

“Everyone when they first see it is amazed at how unique it is. In the living room is a mural,” Roth explains. “People think it is wallpaper, but it’s not wallpaper. It’s an actual painted mural from a woman in the Adirondacks that paints murals of Adirondack scenery.”

Roth says the lake itself is what makes this property extra special.

“It’s one of those lakes that you just want to grab a book and sit and relax.”
