The activist, philanthropist, and environmentalist Tom Steyer has put his eco-friendly home in San Francisco up for sale. The home of the former presidential candidate in the city’s posh Pacific Heights neighborhood is listed for $11 million.

Built in 1908, the 5,625-square-foot residence is brimming with eco-friendly features, including 30 solar panels on the roof, a generator that serves most areas of the house, a solar glass awning along the front of the home, and a double-helix wind turbine.

Even the lush landscaping comes with a green twist—multiple hydroponic planting systems are tucked in among the hedges, ferns, and waterfalls.

But this seven-bedroom, 5.5-bath residence isn’t just eco-friendly, it’s family-friendly as well. After all, Steyer has four children.

One of the bedrooms has a multistudent desk, facing a window—ideal for at-home learning. Another bedroom boasts a quaint fireplace.

There are also two family rooms, one with multiple French doors, in-wall speakers, and a wall of custom bookshelves with a ladder attached.

The other, located on the third floor, is a sprawling room with picture windows facing south to Twin Peaks and the hills of San Francisco.

If those two family rooms aren’t enough, the lower level contains a massive, gymlike playroom, with a basketball hoop and enough room for a pool table, a pingpong table, and any other table game you could possibly think of.

The game room takes up only part of the space on the lower level. The rest is devoted to a spot for live-in guests, with a front sitting room, bedroom, and a bathroom with a shower.

For outdoor recreation, there’s a deck area out back, with a lacrosse/tennis backboard at one end and ample seating at the other end.

The senior family members are also well accommodated, with a primary suite at the front of the house that features large windows facing south and west to let in the light.

The master bedroom also features a walk-in closet with built-ins, and an en suite bathroom with a separate shower and tub.

The location is also prime—the home is located two blocks from the entrance to the Presidio and five blocks from Alta Plaza Park. It’s also close to trendy shops and restaurants on Sacramento and Fillmore Streets.

Steyer, 63, is a billionaire who made his money running a hedge fund. He and his wife signed “The Giving Pledge,” promising to donate half of their fortune to charity during their lifetime, and also launched NextGen America, a nonprofit organization that supports progressive positions on climate change, immigration, health care, and education.

In July 2019, he decided to run as a candidate in the 2020 Democratic presidential primaries. He’s estimated to have spent over $250 million on his campaign before throwing in the towel in February 2020.
