Huge, Contemporary Quonset House Is a Curvaceous Attraction in Texas

Quonset Structures Set Texas Acreage Apart

A large modern Quonset home stands out near Texas A&M University.

Finished in 2017, the half-dome structure in Bryan, TX, has served as the main residence for the owners, who commissioned it five years ago.

“The home is easy to maintain, very energy-efficient, and perfect for living/entertainment. It’s also designed for those with an appreciation for contemporary elegance, with a flavor for the rustic and rural lifestyle,” says Jeremy Richmond, the co-listing agent with Jay Tjoelker, both with Oldham Goodwin Group, LLC.

On the market for $3.9 million, the contemporary structure is just one of the buildings on this huge, 62-acre parcel in central Texas.

Shapely and smart, the main house is seriously spacious. It measures 5,200 square feet, with a single bedroom and 1.5 bathrooms.

“It’s very unique, very cool, and very different. It is also really peaceful out there as well,” says Taelor Adkins, the listing’s transaction coordinator.

Inside, the main house has a sleek, industrial feel. Parts of the domed ceiling are corrugated metal, but other sections are covered with wood, which adds a rustic warmth.

A large floor-to-ceiling fireplace separates the wid-open space into a few distinct areas. More than 17,000 adjustable LED lights brighten everything up.

An entertaining lounge area is at the end of the space, with a wine chiller, beverage chiller, and wet bar.

Several well-disguised kitchen appliances are also in the entertaining space, while other appliances sit behind a partial wall.

In addition to the formal dining area, a breakfast nook is adjacent to the kitchen, Adkins explains.

A large loft space over the living area offers sublime views of the surrounding property.

Outside, a 9-foot-deep pool wraps around two sides of the home, creating an attractive water feature, as well as a welcome place to swim.

“It’s a really cool pool. It kind of wraps around almost half of the main residence, and it’s really peaceful too,” says Adkins. “There’s also a serving window that comes out on the side of the main residence area. If you were outside by the pool and hanging out, someone from inside can hand you a drink.”

Nearby is another large, 4,000-square-foot Quonset barn. The owners built it in 2017, and it features a separate feed room, tool room, equipment, and washroom.

Quonset is the name of the type of architecture, meaning a semicylindrical metal shelter with end walls. The style got its name because they were first manufactured at Quonset Point at the Davisville Naval Construction Battalion Center in Davisville, RI.

A three-bedroom guesthouse with a much more traditional look sits close to the two Quonset structures. It was built in 1993 and has been empty for a while.

“It’s in great condition, but does need a little bit of love,” Adkins says.

The main house and the guesthouse are intended to complement each other.

“[The owners] wanted a main residence where they could hold different events and have a lot of people over,” Adkins says. “When they do have guests, [those guests] can stay at the guesthouse.”

While private and secluded, the large property is close to the population centers of Bryan and College Station, which could mean a wide variety of buyers.

“I feel like everyone’s going to have their own unique style,” Adkins says, “but someone that likes the country, that likes living on 62 acres of land, but also likes to have people over and entertain. You kind of have the best of both worlds.”
