Iowa’s most expensive home sits right in the heart of the capital city.

The 10,241-square-foot mansion in West Des Moines, IA, is on the market for $8.9 million.

“When we looked at it, and we looked at the location, the land, and the price per square foot, it very much is in line with other multimillion-dollar homes,” explains the listing agent, Shane Kennedy with Exp Realty, LLC. “This home just has that much more to offer. We feel that price is very fair, and it’s worth every penny.”

It sits on nearly 10 acres and is the largest private residence in Polk County. Beyond its convenient location in Iowa’s biggest city, the quality of the build is a key selling point.

“It’s a magnificent house, with marble floors and 20-foot ceilings. Everything is all high-end—whether it’s appliances, countertops, flooring, everything,” Kennedy says. “They spared no expense on it.”

Inside, the main house features six bedrooms and six bathrooms, highlighted by a large primary bedroom.

Kennedy told us his favorite part of the house is the basement, with its theater room, easy access to the backyard pool, as well as access to the showroom garage with room for 11 cars.

“It has kind of been parceled to include a weight room, plus storage for cars in there,” the agent says. “It’s all heated and air-conditioned. It’s just a wonderful space.”

The flooring leading from the lower level into the garage space comes with a unique inky-black pattern.

“The original builder was a big car guy. [The current owner] liked the look of it, so he left it. It’s kind of a little river that is supposed to be [an] oil spill on the walkway out to the showroom garage,” Kennedy explains.

A 3,800-square-foot guesthouse is much larger than the average American home.

“It’s a full two-bedroom and a full kitchen. It’s basically its own two-bedroom apartment, with a garage,” Kennedy says.

Construction on the mansion began in 2005, and the current owners took over the project in 2009.

“It was not completely finished. The builder had filed for bankruptcy and did not complete the house,” he adds.

Then the current owners came in and put in a lot of work.

“They basically brought it down to the studs and made it completely different from what the builder had originally planned,” Kennedy says.

In the past few years, the owners have made additional improvements to the home. They spent approximately $300,000 to redesign the pool, patio, and poolhouse.

The roof is also new, along with new gutters, a drainage system, and seven HVAC units.

“We feel like whoever wants this house, and can afford to buy it, will get not only a quality house, but a place that they can call home for a very long time,” Kennedy says.
