San Francisco 49ers legend Joe Montana has tossed his Napa Valley estate onto the market again. Now, the price has been sliced to $24.5 million.

“Villa Montana is a true gem. Nothing compares to the quality and craftsmanship,” says Compass agent Avram Goldman. “It is not just an incredible estate—it is like a Picasso.” Goldman, along with Compass agent Timothy Hayden, represents the Calistoga, CA, listing.

Built over a five-year period and completed in 2003, the Mediterranean villa was inspired by the sellers’ travels through Italy and France, the listing notes. The massive property north of San Francisco includes 500 acres, a main house, guesthouse, stables, and vineyards.

Montana and his wife, Jennifer Montana, initially listed the villa for $49 million in 2009. Two years later, the price was lowered to $35 million. In 2019, it was relisted for $28.9 million. Now that it’s being offered at half its 2009 price, perhaps a buyer will finally step off the sidelines.

The 9,700-square-foot home has three bedrooms, three en suite bathrooms, and one powder room.

It features exquisite finishes from Europe, including antique marble floors, fireplaces, and mantels; 16th-century iron gates; and a 17th-century church altar surround.

Most of the contents of the home, from furniture to architectural features, statuary, and landscape ornamentation, were imported from France.

The European theme starts at the entrance of the home, which is surrounded by a moat and bridge. The interiors feature arched doorways, wood-beamed ceilings, and walls of glass that open out to decks and patios.

The layout includes a living room, family room, dining room, kitchen with an island and breakfast room, and a 3,500-bottle wine cellar. The Montanas also bottle their own olive oil from the property.

The spacious spread includes a two-bedroom guesthouse and spa, a two-bedroom caretaker cottage, a gym and sport court, as well as a five-car garage.

The gorgeous grounds include a pool, pond, and bocce court. In addition to riding trails and stables, the large equestrian facility comes with an arena. There are two streams on the property.

Now 65, Montana starred for 16 seasons in the NFL, mainly with the Niners. The quarterback won four Super Bowls and the title of Super Bowl MVP for three of them. These days, the Hall of Famer has relocated to San Francisco to run his venture capital firm, Liquid 2 Ventures.
