When Jackie Kennedy left the White House after the assassination of her husband, John F. Kennedy, in 1963, she and her two young children, Caroline and John Jr., didn’t go far.

They moved into the familiar comfort of nearby Georgetown, staying in a classic mansion in Washington, DC, owned by the political power couple W. Averell Harriman and Pamela Churchill Harriman. The listing for the home says that it is considered the “most outstanding example of Federal Period architecture.”

Known as the Riggs-Riley House, the storied mansion is now on the market for $10 million.

Originally built around 1805, the eight-bedroom, 5.5-bathroom mansion was constructed for a man named Romulus Riggs, and was the home of Dr. Joshua Riley in the 19th century. Those men are remembered in the home’s moniker, but the residence is best known today for the Harrimans’ tenure as owners—as well as for a very famous short-term tenant. The couple opened their huge home to Kennedy in her extreme moment of need.

For decades, the Harrimans were among the chief movers and shakers in the nation’s capital.

He was a railroad heir, a former governor of New York, secretary of commerce, and ambassador to the United Kingdom and Soviet Union, to name just a few of his posts. She was a socialite and diplomat and served as U.S. ambassador to France during the administration of President Bill Clinton.

The prominent Democrats lived in the home from the 1960s through the 1980s, and not only hosted many lavish parties during their time there, but also had it renovated by the celebrated architect Hugh Newell Jacobsen.

Jacobsen would later go on to design Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis’ home in Martha’s Vineyard, and restore part of the U.S. Embassy in Paris.

The classically designed home has eight bedrooms and 5.5 bathrooms, elaborate moldings on the walls, and light-colored, narrow-board wood on most of the floors.

It’s filled with an abundance of natural light from oversized, north-facing windows, further magnified by the nearly 12-foot ceilings.

Situated on an impressively large, third-of-an-acre lot, an extreme rarity in Georgetown, the home has a spacious backyard. A series of multiple terraces at the back are enhanced by the extensive gardens and a pool. There’s also parking for five cars.

The 9,339-square-foot mansion last sold in 1997, for $1.7 million.
