After accepting a position to coach Marquette’s men’s basketball program, Shaka Smart has put his Austin, TX, home on the market. The custom-built abode is available for $6.5 million.

Smart, who coached the University of Texas Longhorns for six years, chose to move on from the Horns in favor of a job with the Golden Eagles. He’s left behind a five-star residence in the capital city.

Purchased in 2015 for an undisclosed amount shortly after Smart landed the high-profile Texas gig, the home had been listed for $2.8 million.

Built in 2006 and spanning 6,584 square feet, the home features six bedrooms and 7.5 bathrooms. The stonework on the exterior continues inside. Highlights include high ceilings, a formal dining room, and a living room that opens to the patio and pool.

In addition, the great room with a beamed ceiling flows into a chef’s kitchen with granite counters, a breakfast bar, and a range with a pot filler.

The kitchen adjoins a casual dining area and a family room with a fireplace. Also on the main level, you’ll find a wood-paneled library with built-in bookshelves, a windowed office area, and a sitting area.

Bedroom options include a guest bedroom on the main level. Upstairs, the master suite opens to a balcony and includes a master bath with dual vanities. Three more en suite bedrooms can be found on the second level. The third-floor bedroom also has its own bath.

The property comes with a three-car garage, and the large lot allows for a private backyard with a patio, heated pool and spa, and grassy lawn.

During his successful six-year stint as head coach at Virginia Commonwealth University, Smart picked up a stately Colonial Revival for about $1 million in Richmond, VA. When he left the team for Austin, he sold the home for $1.26 million, a little less than the $1.5 million price he sought.

Smart, 44, is returning to his Wisconsin roots. He grew up in Oregon, WI, where he also attended high school. He began his coaching career in 1999, as an assistant, while also earning a master’s degree at California University of Pennsylvania.

Smart snagged his first head coaching job in 2009 with VCU. He led the team to an improbable Final Four appearance in 2011. In 2015, Smart accepted the head coaching position with Austin, but failed to win a single game in the NCAA Tournament in three appearances. In his final season with the Longhorns, Smart’s team won the Big 12 Tournament.

Drew Tate with Tate Property holds the listing.
