A home at the base of the Adirondacks in upstate New York comes with some truly divine features.

This former church built in 1890 on South Main Street in Middleville has come on the market for $369,900.

The renovators “left a lot of the character intact with the original stained-glass windows throughout,” explains listing agent Brandon Mosher. “When you first walk in, it’s just such a grand feeling, like, ‘Oh my goodness, I’m in a church.’ But they’ve done an immaculate job turning it into a residential property.”

The former house of worship now measures 3,104 square feet, which includes three bedrooms and 3.5 bathrooms. Much of that space is open with tall ceilings.

“The first thing that everyone does is they look up,” Mosher says, adding that they notice the height and the condition of the plaster and the beams.

Where the choir once sang now serves as a loft area. Church services were halted in the early 2000s, and a previous owner converted it into a single-family home—finishing the project in 2018.

The home is highlighted by more than a dozen stained-glass windows in the great room and bathrooms.

“The big one is about 12-foot tall, so it’s just such a massive piece and it’s just a grand piece,” Mosher explains. “You see in the light that reflects through it is just all different kinds of colors throughout the course of the day when the sun is shining.”

Beyond the religious theme of the windows, Mosher says, that the house was once a church isn’t obvious.

“The only thing that feels like you’re in a church would be the fact that when you look up, you can tell, OK, this was once a church. Other than that, you wouldn’t really suspect it was a church from the inside. Obviously, the exterior has a traditional Americanized church look, but the interior, there’s really nothing that looks like a church. It’s truly amazing.”

Mosher says the kitchen is perfectly situated in the home and has cherry cabinets, tile floor, granite countertops, and a large island with seating.

Downstairs, there’s another kitchen—which is part of a one-bedroom apartment with a separate entrance.

Mosher says the apartment could provide rental income, and adds that the entire property offers an entrepreneurial buyer the opportunity for a distinctive short-term rental property.

“We’re very close to the Herkimer Diamond Mines, and you’re right on a snowmobile trail that goes up a big hill and is connected to the state trail system.”

Mosher says he has read social media comments about the trepidation of living in a former church, but laughs them off.

“It will take someone with the ability to appreciate and understand the history that’s left intact, but [also] the new modern style of living that you’re going to get with the property,” he says.0
