As the temperatures rise and the days grow longer, it’s about that time—for a good spring cleaning.

However, as people scour their homes with mops and dusters—and their donation piles grow larger—there are some cleaning tasks that they would rather bring in the professionals to do.

The most hated household chore was cleaning tile and grout, according to a recent report from Yelp. The odious exercise in cleanliness can easily take up an afternoon of hard labor.

“Many of these cleaning projects can be very time consuming,” says Yelp trends expert Tara Lewis. “Often, people don’t have the right cleaning products to get the job done, too.”

Yelp came up with its findings by measuring the frequency of searches containing common cleaning-related words, such as carpet cleaning, window washing, junk removal, and many more on the site from 2022 through 2023. The company looked at hundreds of metropolitan areas.

The other most hated chores that renters and homeowners would rather avoid were eco and green cleaning (which involves the use of non-toxic products); cleaning the oven; professional organizing; and decluttering the garage. The rest of the top 10 were cleaning mattress stains, cleaning pools, window washing, upholstery cleaning, and cleaning the carpets.

“The bigger, or more time consuming cleaning jobs like garage decluttering, pool cleaning, upholstery cleaning are left to the pros,” Lewis says.

Yelp also ranked the tidiest metropolitan areas in America, where locals searched Yelp for common cleaning and maintenance services. This included housekeeping, professional organizers, and junk removers.

Honolulu came out on top as the “tidiest” area, according to Yelp. Residents in Hawaii’s capital searched for professional organizers, housekeepers, pool cleaners, and upholstery cleaners.

The median home price in the Honolulu metro is $789,750, according to the most recent Realtor.com® data.

Honolulu was followed by San Francisco; Detroit; Orlando, FL; and Boston. Rounding out the top 10 San Diego; Los Angeles; Tampa, FL; Las Vegas; and St. Louis.
