Swanky in South Dakota: The State’s Most Expensive Home Is a $6M Spectacle With Unreal Amenities

A waterfront mansion in Dakota Dunes, SD, is the state’s priciest listing, at a tidy $6 million.

Complete with a cigar lounge, sauna, golf simulator, theater, and temperature-controlled wine room, the four-bedroom residence spans 9,092 square feet and rests on 1.4 acres.

“It is amenity-rich, with everything you would expect from a luxury listing,” says listing agent Jacob Benedict, of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Midwest Realty. “Every bathroom and shower offers views of the river.”

That would be the Missouri River, separating South Dakota and Nebraska.

“What is unique to this house is the construction,” Benedict says. “It took two years to build. It was strategically built above the flood plains and spans two lots in a country club community.”

Custom built in 2008, the exterior features copper gutters and a slate roof. The interior is an equally stylish affair.

“If you see the mechanical room, you would need a PhD to do anything with it,” Benedict jokes. “It’s one of the most impressive ones I have ever seen and something you would see in a commercial-type property.”

The open floor plan is surrounded by glass, flooding the space with natural light.

“It has a contemporary, more modern design element to it,” Benedict observes, adding that the decor nicely incorporates color. “It is by no means cold or gray.”

A double-door front entry gives way to a spacious foyer.

Meanwhile, the adjacent sitting room with a custom wood ceiling comes with waterfront views.

An enormous fitness center is well appointed, with a hot tub and wet bar.

The chef’s kitchen boasts two islands—including one with prep sink; sleek, dark-wood cabinetry; a wall oven; and other high-end appliances.

The luxury doesn’t stop there, though.

“There is a convenience factor as all of the terraces, patios, and driveways are heated,” Benedict says. “The quality of construction and ease of maintenance is very appealing. It is a very forward-thinking home … timeless yet modern.”

An elevator offers easy access to each of the home’s levels, while three separate sitting areas with terraces afford water views and ideal backdrops for entertaining.

Attractive area

The property’s location is also a major selling point. A variety of economic and political factors, as well as tax benefits, have driven “a lot of migration” to South Dakota in recent years, Benedict says.

The buyer “is going to be someone who is very much attracted to the home and the area,” he predicts. “People who come here looking to get out of an urban setting are also looking for recreational opportunities. This home is on the border of Iowa with the closest city, Sioux City, just 10 minutes away.”

In addition to a desirable setting, home also has the versatility to be a primary or secondary residence, Benedict contends.

“The next owner could be someone who works in Sioux City or travels a lot, and this is one of their landing pads, so to speak,” he says.
