A home with ties to the “Joy of Painting” host Bob Ross is for sale in New Smyrna Beach, FL.

At one time, the Mediterranean residence was an artists’ retreat for students wanting to learn Ross’ wet-on-wet, oil-painting technique that made it possible to complete a canvas in under 30 minutes.

The picturesque property is now available for $1,999,000.

Creative retreat

Ross died in July 1995 at the age of 52, but his teaching legacy lived on.

His company, Bob Ross, Inc., bought this 5,013-square-foot property in 1996 as a “classroom by the sea.” It was in this space that Bob Ross-certified instructors imparted his technique.

“I think that the legacy of Bob Ross is really very powerful,” says listing agent Mark Ehrli, with Premier Sotheby’s International Realty, noting the emotion and depth of Ross’ work. “Just the kind of human being that he was really makes a legion of fans throughout the country and throughout the world.”

Meanwhile, Ross had many ties to the city of New Smyrna Beach. He lived in the area, where he opened the Bob Ross Art Workshop and Gallery in 1993.

“He has a great connectivity with New Smyrna Beach and I would venture to say, kind of a favorite son,” Ehrli notes.

Artful residence

No longer used as an art studio, the inviting property has since been converted into a single-family home.

Built in 1988, the three-story house has four bedrooms and four bathrooms. Spanish-inspired details such as tiles, mahogany doors, arches, and exposed beams are found throughout the home.

The dwelling’s stained glass, 18-foot ceilings, beautiful pool, and close proximity to the ocean make it a “really peaceful place,” Ehrli says.

The pool, by the way, is a resortlike beauty that can be glimpsed from inside.

“It’s pretty cool,” Ehrli says. “By the pool table, there’s a window you can actually see people swimming.”

The home has had two owners since Bob Ross, Inc., had the property. The company sold the house in 1999, and the sellers bought it in 2018.

Ehrli believes the ideal buyer is someone with “very discerning tastes,” in terms of finishes and materials.

“It’s beautiful, just gorgeous, and very well maintained,” he says. “The current owners are quite proud of its legacy.”

Ross’ trademark art classes have aired on more than 300 Public Broadcasting Service affiliates across the U.S.
