We Feel Fine: $2M ‘End of the World’ Bunker in Missouri Is Comfy and Ready for Doomsday

Calling all preppers! A luxe doomsday bunker, outfitted for a potential apocalypse, is on the market in Polo, MO, for $2 million.

Offering over 10,000 square feet of underground space, the building was constructed in the 1960s as a nuclear war-proof communications center.

“It was decommissioned in the late ’80s,” says listing agent Colleen Roberts, of ReeceNichols. “It is definitely something I have never seen before in my career. It’s a super interesting property, and we have had a lot of interest from people who are curious about it, wanting to tour it.”

The end-times abode is owned by a high-school friend of Roberts, who says the place is “so nondescript that you would never even know it was there.”

The two-level interior boasts 2.5-foot-thick, concrete walls; electromagnetic-resistant copper shielding; a 177-foot communication tower; an emergency hatch; and two 3,000-pound, blast-proof doors.

When it was built more than 60 years ago, the home’s construction cost $4.5 million—”an equivalent value today exceeding $34 million,” according to the listing details.

“The seller’s original intent was to build a dream home over the bunker and live there,” Roberts notes. “You could run a business out of there. It is currently used as a glass blowing business.”

She says the owner, who has lived there for over a decade, thought the property “was cool” when he first saw it.

“He had seen it years before, and when he found out it was for sale, he decided to go for it,” she says.

A windowless lower level boasts a spacious living area with a bar nearby. The updated kitchen has sleek, black cabinets and modern appliances. There’s also a soundproof music studio with recording facilities, a home gym, and even a theater room with a pool table.

The self-sufficient property has a private water well; new pump; and a 10,000-gallon, stainless steel water-storage tank connected to a filtration system. An original communication tower still exists, along with an emergency escape hatch.

The listing goes on to note that with “room to spare, you can consider adding pools, outbuildings, or even a helipad if it suits your desires.”

A 10.5-acre parcel, the property is about 40 minutes from downtown Kansas City.

“Polo is super tiny, but it is easy to get to,” Roberts notes. “It’s about 10 minutes off the 35 Highway.”

As for the next buyer, interest has been all over the map, she says

“We have had multiple calls from doomsday-type people,” Roberts reveals. “We have also had interest from people wanting to use it for growing operations for marijuana. It’s on a well, so the water costs are not expensive. Some have inquired about using it as an Airbnb; but there are no true bedrooms, and there are no windows. There are also just two escape routes.”
