A spectacular summer cottage in Jamestown, RI—on a 9-square-mile island connected by two bridges—just hit the market for $3,995,000.

The charming, four-bedroom home was built for Pennsylvania Railroad Company vice president John P. Green in 1889. Known as Anoatock, the place was designed by architect Charles Bevins. Nearby, a waterfront dock on Cottrell Pier was originally constructed to accommodate Green’s yacht.

During this time period, the area was a popular vacation spot.

“A large following found Jamestown to be their summer playground,” says listing agent Robert Bailey, of Lila Delman Real Estate. “The architect was originally from England [and] migrated to the U.S. in the late-1800s. Charles Bevins was into shingle-style architecture, and his design is prevalent throughout the construction.”

The modernized 5,888-square-foot interior boasts numerous historic details, including custom millwork, built-in bookcases and window seating, and preserved hardwood floors. The home underwent a “major renovation” in 1998, but great care was taken to preserve its past, Bailey says.

The upgrades included a new sprinkler system, updated mechanical and electrical systems, and improvements to the home’s six wood-burning fireplaces. In 2020, a two car garage was added.

A bright-blue front door leads to a spacious living room, formal dining room, and other sitting areas. The gourmet kitchen has an oversized island, a butler’s pantry, and breakfast nook.

A screened and covered porch are situated on the main level. Nearby, a bluestone patio features an enormous outdoor fireplaces and access to the home’s kitchen.

There are two bedrooms upstairs, including a primary suite with a separate sitting area and walk-in dressing room.

According to the listing, a back staircase leads up to a recently added bonus room that could be used as a home office or studio.

There are two more bedrooms on the third floor.

Additional studio space awaits above the two-car garage. Meanwhile, a detached single-car garage includes a guest suite for visitors.

The 2.5-acre grounds are beautifully manicured and just a few steps from Block Island Sound.

Bailey believes the property likely will be purchased as a second home.

“The buyer will want to have access to the waterfront and boating activities,” he says. “Jamestown is quiet, pastoral, and thrives on the preservation of the land. There are lots of small shops and restaurants—but no chains.”
