A brand-new, modernist masterpiece on the New York-Massachusetts border is on the market for $2,875,000.

The boxy build, known as Nine Square House, sits on 9 private acres at the end of Sky Top Road in Copake, NY, and comes with epic views of the Taconic Hills.

“The owner is the one who designed the home—it’s inspired by the modernist architecture that transformed Palm Springs in the early ’60s,” says listing agent Raj Kumar, of Four Seasons Sotheby’s International Realty.

Form and function

Elements that are “both functional and pleasing to the eye” abound throughout the nearly 3,900-square-foot home, the listing notes. The main floor features an open-concept interior with a double living room, dining area, and kitchen—all arranged around a large, marble fireplace.

Expansive windows and glass doors allow in ample light from the surrounding wooded landscapes, creating a treehouselike vibe.

An office, a dry bar, and laundry room round out the main level, while the upper level consists of a reading room, four bedrooms, and two of the three bathrooms.

The home has perfect proportions and clean lines,” Kumar says. “It was built as strong as possible, using honest materials and simple, strong techniques—for example, the concrete on rock that doubles the required strength of each beam.”

Good insulation was also one of the owner’s requirements for the eco-friendly build, which was completed over several years.

“The idea was to be able to heat it with a candle and cool it with an ice cube, so they far exceeded the insulation requirements and even put exterior insulation on the roof,” Kumar says.

Other notable features include multizone central AC, radiant-heated floors, cast-iron sinks, and forged-brass and nickel hardware. In the kitchen, the next owners will enjoy Danish-designed cabinetry, marble counters, and high-end appliances.

The property’s natural landscape overlooks two scenic mountain ranges.

But despite its remote feeling, the residence is actually well positioned to nearby urban centers. Kumar notes that it’s about 20 minutes from Hudson, NY, and Great Barrington, MA, and just two hours from New York City.
