A George Maher–designed, Prairie-style masterpiece in Evanston, IL, just came on the market for the first time in more than five decades.

The six-bedroom, 3.5-bath house in the Dewey Historical District is pending sale after just 15 days. The list price is $995,000, and the listing agent is Leslie Glazier of @properties East Lincoln Park.

Maher, a Chicago architect, was a pioneer of the Prairie and Arts and Crafts styles. He was also a contemporary of Frank Lloyd Wright.

The sellers have had this home for 53 years and are only the third family to own it. Unlike many historical homes that are subdivided into rooms or apartments, this property built in 1909 has remained a single-family home.

“Evanston is so full of different kinds of architecture: Arts and Crafts, Shaker, Prairie. It’s such a gem,” says Glazier.

Original features

Original features include hardwood flooring, leaded- and stained-glass windows, a wooden staircase in the foyer, fireplaces, built-ins, woodwork, and moldings. A bay window in the dining room is another vintage amenity that’s rare in today’s homes.

“With many original features, it’s nearly the same as when it was built,” says Glazier, “except they added an addition—a family room—and, above it, a primary bedroom. It just has good bones.”

Those “good bones” are attracting a lot of interest, says Glazier. “The [potential] buyers who have come through all love the integrity of the home and are not looking to renovate the whole thing.

“You get sunbeams and light coming in” through the leaded-glass windows,” adds Glazier. “There are rainbows all over the house.”

Fifteen years ago, the sellers added a small porch on the front of the house and turned a front closet into a powder room.

There is also a garden, brick patio, and fenced yard. The listing includes a one-car garage.

“The location is amazing, and everything is in walking distance. It’s very quiet,” says Glazier about the neighborhood, which is a few blocks from downtown Evanston.
