If an iconic architect like Pierre Koenig builds a home for himself, you know it’s going to be the culmination of his talent, vision, and experience. His design of L.A.’s  Case Study House #22 is considered to be “embodiment” of postwar modern architecture.

That’s why fans of midcentury modern design will flip when they find out that for the second time in seven years, the Brentwood home Koenig built for himself in 1985 has returned to the market—this time for $4,995,000.

When last we visited the 2,827-square-foot, three-bedroom, 2.5-bath glass-walled structure, it had been meticulously restored by Koenig’s stepchildren and was listed at $3.8 million in 2017. It quickly sold for $3.5 million.

It appears the current owners warmed it up and added a few amenities before they decided to sell. The white tiles in the great room, for example, have been replaced with light-wood planks; and the once-white countertops have been swapped for sumptuous, warm-gray marble.

Meanwhile, Koenig’s light-filled architectural studio, which held drafting tables and his desk when the house was last sold, now has more of a gallery feel.

Also, there is now a pool with a sizable modern cabana in the backyard, utilizing more of the 6,002-square-foot lot in the highly sought-after neighborhood.

The home’s unique architectural features, however, have been left in place. These are highlighted by a three-story atrium, crossed by landings and accessed by remarkable glass staircases. It’s illuminated by full-height clerestory windows and has exceptional acoustics that filter music into all parts of the home.

Other remaining original features include the music room, parlor, and a media/family room adjacent to Koenig’s former architectural studio. All of these spaces open to a courtyard with a fountain and decks.

Koenig, who died in 2004 at age of 78, is renowned for some of the most distinctive midcentury modern homes on the West Coast, including Case Study Houses #21 and #22. The L.A. Conservancy has archived his former private residence as Koenig House #2.
