Built in 1965, a $2M Midcentury Home on the Water in Orlando Makes Market Debut

Built in the mid-1960s, a midcentury modern home in the heart of Orlando, FL, still offers plenty of atomic-age charm. There is an abundance of original details—plus plenty of potential to transform this home into a true showpiece.

“It is a one-owner home, and it is original from 1965,” says John Pinel, who is listing the property with Mick Night. Both are with Premier Sotheby’s International Realty. “The stacked-stone wall in the front of the house is pretty unique, and it’s got a really cool porte-cochère in the front.”

Nearly 60 years after it was built on the shores of Lake Fairview, the one-of-a-kind abode is on the market for $1.95 million. Well preserved over the decades, it’s being sold by the children of the original owners.

“It has midcentury modern lines and a lot of natural light,” Pinel says. “There are just a lot of cool rooms in there.”

Central Florida architect Manfred Lopatka designed the three-bedroom residence with water views in mind.

Most areas of the home will need to be brought into the 21st century, and a new owner will likely have to contend with wallpaper removal. The floral wall covering in the kitchen is dated but easy enough to remove.

“I think the kitchen is original, countertops and all,” Pinel says.

Other ’60s-era touches include an upstairs bathroom with a blue sink, toilet, and bathtub. While the colored fixtures are certainly distinctive, Pinel tells us they probably won’t be part of a buyer’s plans for the home.

“People who are looking at multimillion-dollar properties don’t want a 60-year-old kitchen and bathrooms and windows and doors,” he says. “It’s just not functional. You could live in there, but I don’t see anybody that’s going to move into the place the way it is. It needs everything—windows, flooring, lighting. It’s all 60 years old.”

While it will need updates, the home’s roof and HVAC systems have been replaced, and a new generator was added, Pinel says.

The 3,794-square-foot home sits on more than a half-acre of prime, waterfront property with room for a pool and a dock.

“It’s got sliders all across the back in all the rooms that face the lake, so there’s a lake view in every room,” Pinel notes.

And the possibilities for renewal are tantalizing.

The perfect buyer “is somebody that wants a lakefront home in Central Florida near downtown, likes the midcentury modern architecture, and is willing to come in and spend some time and some money and energy to make it their own and—keep those architectural elements in place,” Pinel says.
