Metro Atlanta should get off to a dry start on Sunday morning, but a series of afternoon showers could put a damper on those outdoor plans.

North Georgia’s streak of summer storms will likely linger through midweek, Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Eboni Deon said.

Like Saturday, the second half of the weekend will start off relatively dry, but that’s expected to change as isolated showers move through Atlanta after lunch.

“It’s going to be wet on and off again throughout this entire weekend,” Deon said. “It’s not going to be a washout, but we can certainly count on some heavy rain at times.”

Sunday’s high is expected to reach 84 degrees in the city, and there’s a 40% chance of rain, according to the latest forecast. Deon suggests having an indoor backup plan just in case the wet weather causes those outdoor activities to fall through.

The chance of rain remains at 40% to kick of the work week, and metro Atlanta residents can expect those pop-up showers to stick around through at least Wednesday.

“We’ll still have that chance of rain around, not as widespread and not as much, but there will be that opportunity for more wet times,” Deon said.

Despite the rain, Georgia Department of Transportation crews have a series of weekend construction projects planned that could cause some delays on metro Atlanta’s interstates.

Lane closures are planned in both directions of I-285 and Ga. 400 as work continues at the interchange this weekend. Travel restrictions include possible delays, reduced speeds and detours in some areas, GDOT officials said. In addition, overnight lane and ramp closures are expected at I-285 and Langford Parkway this weekend as work begins on a bridge rehabilitation project. Crews are expected to finish by 5 a.m. Monday.
