A historic compound that’s architecturally significant in Los Ranchos, NM, is on the market for $975,000.

The three-bedroom property at 1024 El Pueblo Road NW was initially listed in October. It dates to 1880 and was built on a nearly 1-acre lot.

The 2,899-square-foot structure spent many years in a state of disrepair until authors Tom and Janet Kromer purchased it in 1937.

The couple spent many years restoring the home, and the effort was continued in 1962 when architect Harvey Hoshour and his artist wife, Lise Hoshour, purchased the property.

“Harvey, a one-time associate of Mies van der Rohe and later Alexander Girard, is known regionally and internationally for his modern style in multiple civic works,” says listing agent Marsha Adams. “Their efforts resulted in acceptance as the Kromer House to the National Registry of Historic Places.”

In addition to the main residence, the pueblo-style compound includes a casita, a workshop space, and a three-car garage. The compound is surrounded by mature trees and native plants.

“As with many period buildings, the Kromer House was constructed in phases,” Adams says. “Its earliest rooms were built of earthen sod blocks stacked together before plastering. Later additions were built of traditional adobe.”

The house was originally heated by five kiva-style fireplaces, which remain intact. Other original features include the single-paned glazed windows and the wide-plank wood floors.

“Over the past two decades, significant upgrades have included the renovation of all bathrooms, modernization of the kitchen, and the addition of a kitchen facility to the adjacent casita,” says Adams. “New HVAC systems have also been added, including air conditioning.”

The home is about a 20-minute drive from downtown Albuquerque.
