City folks love to escape to the country when they can—and Stephen Sondheim was no different.

When the famed Broadway composer and lyricist wanted some peace and quiet away from Manhattan, he retreated to his country estate in Roxbury, CT. That 9-acre estate is now on the market for $3,250,000.

Sondheim, who died in 2021, also owned a townhouse in New York City, which is pending sale.

Here’s a look at the gorgeous country estate in Connecticut that Sondheim called home for nearly 40 years.

Harmonious and historic home

Built more than 230 years ago, the country house has been updated, but historic details remain, including the wide-plank wood flooring and stone fireplaces. The three-bedroom, 3.5-bath home features a comfortable layout and bright and spacious rooms.

There’s a vaulted ceiling in the living room, a sunroom, a formal dining room with a fireplace, and a kitchen with an island and wine storage.

As one would expect, the home features a music room, which fits a grand piano. There’s also loads of space for books, including a paneled library in the large bathroom.

The property comes with a pool, a one-bedroom pool house, and a detached two-car garage. The acreage features a trellis, lush lawns, and stone walls.

Sondheim won eight Tonys over his vast career, which includes writing the lyrics and music for numerous hit Broadway shows. Among his most famous works are “West Side Story,” “Gypsy,” “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum,” “Into the Woods,” and “Sweeney Todd.”
