Seven years after the son of a billionaire purchased the Playboy Mansion, the sprawling Los Angeles residence is still undergoing extensive renovations, according to an exclusive in the Daily Mail.

Four years into the estimated $10 million renovation, the home doesn’t appear close to finished, according to the Mail.

Entrepreneur Daren Metropoulos purchased the 29-room mansion for $100 million in 2016. The famous home, located in Holmby Hills, an exclusive area near Beverly Hills, had originally been listed for twice as much. But the property came with a tenant: Playboy founder Hugh Hefner, who was allowed to live on the property until his death in September 2017.

Before his death, Playmates had complained the mansion was dilapidated and “stuck in the 1980s,” as Playmate Carla Howe previously told The Sun. Hefner had purchased it for $1.05 million in 1971.

Metropoulos hired architect Richard Landry, whose celebrity-studded roster of clients has included Tom Brady and Giselle Bündchen, Mark Wahlberg, and Kylie Jenner.

Metropoulos plans to connect the Playboy Mansion estate with his home next door to create a roughly 7.3-acre compound. He had purchased the other home in 2009 from Hefner and his now ex-wife Kimberly Conrad for $18 million, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Some of the work being done on the home, where the popular TV show “The Girls Next Door” was filmed, includes constructing a 4,400 addition to the main house. When it’s finished, the main house alone will be 18,000 square feet.

Metropoulos is also having a new basement under the mansion constructed, building a new guesthouse, and adding a golf simulator and a solarium to the property. The in-house movie theater is getting larger.

The main house is also undergoing renovations with planned kitchen, bathroom, and family room remodels and an updated guest suite on the second floor.

Shortly after the purchase, Metropolous told the Wall Street Journal that he looked “forward to eventually rejoining the two estates and enjoying this beautiful property as my private residence for years to come.”

Metropolous is known as the “Twinkie King” as he was the former co-owner of Hostess Brands. He has also served as co-CEO of Pabst Brewing. In 2021, he purchased a five-bedroom, oceanfront home in Miami for $18 million, according to The Real Deal.

The Playboy Mansion has a legendary history, with some of the biggest names having been guests at the home.

Former President (and current presidential candidate) Donald Trump filmed an episode of “The Apprentice” at the mansion in 2006. And John Lennon allegedly burned an original Matisse in the home with a cigarette.
