$349K Spaceship-Looking House in Missouri Lands an Earthbound Buyer

Multiple offers came in for an out-of-this-world home in Kansas City, MO. The place looks like it flew in from another planet.

“The appearance of it in general makes it very unique,” says listing agent Branigan Barnett, with Keller Williams Realty Southland Partners. “It’s all octagon and just not your cookie cutter house. It’s pretty cool.”

The “spaceship on earth,” as Barnett calls it, has a pending offer. The home was listed in mid-June for $349,500.

Built in 1968, during the height of the space race, the home was in a state of disrepair when the seller bought it a few years ago. He had planned to turn it into a vacation rental. But when that didn’t work out, he decided to sell it, Barnett says.

Because the home was renovated as a short-term rental, the kitchen is small and efficient but without an island.

The home has three bedrooms and two full bathrooms in a unique layout.

“When you walk in, you have a big sunken living room, which gives people the opportunity to gather and sit around and chat,” Barnett says, adding that the space is “very open concept, and the architecture itself is just really neat.”

The bedrooms are on the lower level, with all the living space and wood ceilings on the entry level.

“It’s a great house for entertaining; and it’s a great family house, too, because it kind of forces you to be together because everything is in that one space,” Barnett explains. “The sunken living room is just a fun space. Instead of sitting around a table, you can sit around there.”

Barnett has worked with the seller, who is an experienced flipper, on about a hundred sales over the past seven years.

“This is definitely the most unique property I have ever listed, and I just really liked it,” she says. “It just has so much character.”

The buyers are architects who are moving to Kansas City from out of state.

“The wife loved the shape of the house and how open it was,” Barnett says. “It has a really nice patio that overlooks the creek, and she loved the open space, but I really think she loved that sunken living room. You can do so much cool stuff with that space.”

More than 200 people came to look at the home.

Many of them “wanted to come look at it just because of the uniqueness of it,” Barnett says.
