An Extraordinary Delaware Antique on 152 Acres for $18M Is the State's Most Expensive Home

It’s not often that an exquisite estate boasting history, location, and amenities hits the market, but a uniquely beautiful listing in Greenville, DE, offers exactly that.

Priced at $18 million, it’s also the state’s most expensive home. The 11,875-square-foot mansion dubbed Shadowbrook sits on 152 acres of unrestricted land.

“The acreage is drop-dead breathtaking, and there is a 7-acre pond,” says listing agent Steve Crifasi, of Patterson-Schwartz Greenville Center. “The views are phenomenal. What makes the property so unique is that it is very private, and you can’t see it from the road. It’s very relaxing and peaceful when you are there.”

The nearly 12,000-square-foot fieldstone home was built in 1939. It has been well maintained and thoughtfully updated over the years, although many period details remain.

Historic highlights include crown moldings, exposed beams, custom wainscoting, wide-plank hardwood floors, “museum quality millwork,” and numerous fireplaces.

The sprawling property also has a waterfall, creek, tower house, pool house, gate house, farmhouse duplex, and mill house.

Impressively maintained

“The family that owns the property has maintained it so well,” Crifasi says. “They have installed six geothermal systems and a new ceramic-tile roof. All of the woodworking inside and outside is in beautiful condition. Whoever buys this house will spend money on fun items, which is really unusual for a home of this age to not have to update the systems.”

He adds that with most homes this old, buyers often have to deal with issues such as “removing buried tanks or asbestos wrapping.” But because the current owners have already taken care of that maintenance, the house is ready to enjoy as is.

An elliptical staircase serves as the focal point of the home’s main entry. And the butternut, wood-paneled library has a fireplace and walls of built-in bookcases.

Another cozy living area features multiple-width plank floors, wood-paneled walls, and a fireplace.

The updated kitchen offers an island with butcher-block countertops; high, decorative ceilings; and lots of custom cabinets.

‘Great for equestrians’

The property also comes with plenty of room for four-hoofed residents.

“There are two barns with 25 horse stalls between the two, so the property would be great for equestrians,” Crifasi says. “It would also be ideal for someone looking for privacy and land. The incredible thing is that it is located just a 10-minute drive to restaurants and stores, so the convenience of it is a big plus.”

And while he acknowledges that the price tag is “a high humber for Delaware,” Crifasi reiterates the home’s impeccable condition. He believes the next owner is likely to use the place as a main residence.

“I would think it would be a primary home for someone at this price tag,” he says. “It’s not restricted as far as preservation, so the land could be subdivided and developed. You could get 20 to 30 lots possibly, but it has to be done in a way to protect the home.”
