Go, Packers!

This year, Green Bay, WI, topped the annual list of the best places in the country to live, according to a recent ranking from U.S. News & World Report. It knocked the aerospace hub of Huntsville, AL, out of the No. 1 spot.

“This year’s rankings are a reflection of the current economic, social, and natural factors that impact a place’s livability for its residents,” Devon Thorsby, real estate editor at U.S. News, said in a statement.

The rankings evaluated the nation’s 150 largest metropolitan areas for value, quality of life, the strength of the local job market, and desirability. Factors like housing affordability, local temperatures, and the per capita number of activities, restaurants, and bars were included in those metrics.

The best places to live were mostly concentrated in the South, where six of the top 10 were located. North Carolina, Colorado, and Florida each had two places.

Green Bay, about two hours north of Milwaukee on the shores of the Green Bay, was the only Midwestern city to crack the top 10. Perhaps best known for its storied NFL team the Green Bay Packers, the state’s oldest settlement is also home to about 10 colleges, universities, and community colleges, including the University of Wisconsin. Packers all-star QB Aaron Rogers may have decamped for New York and the Jets, but plenty of others are moving to the area.

One perk of the city of more than 100,000 residents is that real estate in the metro area is still affordable. The median home price in the Green Bay metro area was about $412,000 in April, about 4% less than the national median price tag of $430,000, according to the most recent Realtor.com® data.

“People are considering more than housing when they look at an area’s affordability—they want to know how much goods cost in that area,” Thorsby said. “The ever-present risk for severe weather and a community’s ability to recover—coupled with the area’s opportunities for social activities—are also taken into account.”
