Paging all buyers in the market for a dazzling, design-centric showpiece: This 1950s-era, open-concept home just might be The One.

Built in 1955 in Pasadena, CA , the exceptional dwelling was originally created by notable architect Lyman Ennis.

Known as the Ennis House, the well-preserved home is listing with Chelby Crawford, at Compass, for $2,595,000—a $105,000 reduction from its original $2,700,000 asking price in January.

“If you’re a midcentury modern enthusiast, you know who [Ennis] is,” says Crawford, elaborating on the famed architect’s philosophy. “He pulled the outdoors inside, so a small house would feel larger than it was.”

A post-and-beam style was employed for the 1,928-square-foot, three-bedroom, two-bath residence.

“When the seller bought it, it wasn’t in its pristine, midcentury condition,” Crawford says.

Four years after the $370,000 purchase in 1996, the seller launched into extensive renovations.

“He spent some time living there, envisioning what he wanted,” Crawford says. “He tore it down to the studs and completely restored it.”

Among the improvements were the additions of a hillside pool and spa that take advantage of the property’s spectacular views.

Other design features include a stone-stacked fireplace and slate flooring. The modernizations add contemporary luxuries “while respectfully preserving the original design,” the listing notes.

The kitchen was outfitted with high-end appliances—a Gaggenau oven and range, Sub-Zero fridge, and a Fisher and Paykel dishwasher—along with stainless steel countertops and a marble island with seating.

There are stainless steel fixtures, a walk-in shower, an aluminum soaking tub, and skylights in the bath. Other highlights include a primary bedroom that opens to a deck and an office.

Plus, “the house is built on granite,” Crawford says. “It’s solid as a rock.”

Perched at the end of a private road with views of the San Gabriel Mountains, the downtown Los Angeles skyline, and The Rose Bowl, this property’s all about privacy. Being so close to the golf club is like having a park in the backyard, too.

“It’s very private, serene, peaceful, and quiet,” says Crawford. “You share the space with the hawks and owls.”

A neighboring empty lot spanning 9,048 square feet is also included in the sale.

“The target buyer is edgy, not necessarily young, but maybe the musician or artist type who appreciates art and not just architecture,” Crawford says. “We’ve had celebrity-status people interested. We’ve had a lot of golfers show interest due to being near Avondale Golf Club, and [also] a lot of designers with young children.”

Ennis was based in Pasadena for some 40 years and designed dozens of contemporary homes throughout Southern California during his career. He died in 2009.

In fact, another Pasadena house designed by the architect—a three-bedroom, one-bath property built in 1956—just sold for $4,030,000.
