A well-traveled baseball closer is hoping to close the deal on a custom home he built just a few years ago.

All-Star Mark Melancon commissioned a luxurious, 5,921-square-foot waterfront home in Holmes Beach, FL, for his family in 2020.

After hitting the market last year for $14.8 million, the home has been relisted for $10.95 million.

Relocation to yet another big-league town has spurred the owners to sell.

“They lived in the house for a couple of years; and as a professional baseball player, right now he’s playing out West, so he had to relocate his family,” says listing agent Charles Buky, with Coldwell Banker Realty.

“They have three small children, and it was just getting harder and harder to move multiple times throughout the year,” Buky says. “So that’s the only reason they’re selling.”

Melancon is employed by the Arizona Diamondbacks, although he’s on the injured list with a shoulder strain that threatens to keep him out for months.

As for the sizable discount, it’s a dose of reality for a family that truly didn’t want to part with their home in the Sunshine State.

“They were going back and forth about whether they really wanted to sell, because they love this house so much,” Buky explains. “They really did not want to sell in the beginning, and that’s why the price was where it was. But now they’re at the point where they’re taking the selling process more seriously and priced the property where the market says it should be.”

‘Functional wow house’

The home sits on a third-acre and comes with two deep-water docks.

“It’s right on Bimini Bay on Anna Maria Island and has water on two sides, since it’s on a point,” Buky says. “There are just gorgeous views overlooking the bay and wildlife. They built the house around the bay with that feel.”

Even with the serious square footage and six bedrooms, the house feels very comfortable.

“It’s functional, but it still has the wow factors—so it’s a functional wow house,” he says.

The home has several entertaining spaces, including a game room, wine room, and a kitchen with a 16-foot island.

“There’s no wasted space in it, so whether you’re a retired couple, a single person, or someone with a big family, I think this house is accommodating,” Buky says.

Outside, the putting green has a sand trap, and there’s an infinity pool that appears as if it’s draining right into the bay.

“The views are what makes the property what it is,” Buky says, noting that because the home is on Florida’s west coast, instead of the east side, the price tag is more accessible.

“I think if you were over in the West Palm Beach area, this house would be about 60 to 70% more,” he says.

Buky says the area has a comfortable feel with a combination of full-and part-time residents.

“It’s a lifestyle,” he says. “You’re able to do everything. You have your boat in your backyard. You can go out and catch dinner and then cook it in the outdoor kitchen. It’s the ultimate Florida lifestyle.”

Melancon, 38, broke into the big leagues with the New York Yankees in 2009. The four-time All Star has suited up for eight other teams since then and has racked up 262 saves over the course of his career.
